The bookstore is on Gente St.

What Mexico City needs is a good large English language bookstore. With a population of 23 million people you'd think there were enough foreigners here to support a Barnes and Noble or a Border's Books!!!

There's a combination bookstore & caf in Polanco with a (relatively) large English section, and a large section of English-language magazines, too. I'm drawing a blank on the location, but it might be Masaryk near Temistocles or Galileo or thereabouts. Does that ring a bell with anyone? They have all the English books that are stocked at the airport stores, plus some more.

Mixup music stores have a selection of English books, as does Gandhi. I would have thought there to be some demand, but this country has difficulty holding even a single English language newspaper. The News folded 3 years ago, then was replaced by the Miami Herald ( Mad ) only to have recently folded. Word is that the News is making a comeback...

I was thinking specifically of the new Harry Potter book (in English) that is coming out in a few weeks. I'm pretty sure I can get it at the airport, but was wondering if there were other places as well.

hlamb,

That's the kind of thing they'd have at Sanbourne's. Different locations have a different amount of English books. For example the one in Acapulco had quiet a large selection! I believe the Casa de los Azulejos Sanbourne's has one of the larger selections in Mexico City, and it is near a nice Ghandi and other bookshops as well if they don't have it.

Ernest, I remember us having this conversation when you first got here. I think a lot of the foriegners living in and around Mexico City learn to read in Spanish, or visit the US often enough to keep themselves in books.
If you think it'd be successfull, you could always have a go at it yourself. Wink

I was talking to some of the local high school teachers of English today about getting materials and I remembered that DELTI, who primarily distribute language teaching/learning books also handle a large amount of literature and nonfiction books in English. They have several bookshops around the city. I've been to the ones in San Antonio and Del Valle as well as their shop in Puebla. Not a bad selection. They also have an online store at www.delti.com.mx

So you are looking for the Potter Book. I am looking for the second half paperback of B. Clinton`s autobiography. I bought the first half in Merida as the second half had not come out.

Gandhi, for sure. I see by the website that the adult edition is already presold out. There will be a 2.5-day festival at the M.A. de Quevedo bookstore, with sales starting at midnight on Friday the 20th, and continuing on Saturday (if supplies last!) One can expect masses of costumed fans.

Information about the launch party (in Spanish) here: http://www.hogwarts-mexico.com/deathly/

We were at the M.A. de Quevedo Gandhi bookstore last night at midnight, lined up with some hundreds of other people and we bought our copy of Deathly Hallows. Were you? As expected, masses of costumed, noisy, enthusiastic fans were there. There is another similar festival at the Satelite Gandhi, apparently. Party goes on until Sunday; book is sold while supplies last.

Sanborns Mexico has the new Harry Potter and so does Walmart. It's 450 pesos at Sanborns here and 429 pesos at Walmart.

!!?? We paid 365 pesos at Gandhi. I only don't know if that was a launch special or if it's going to be their regular price.

Since I'm still in the States, I can order a copy on-line from Barnes and Noble and pay around $20 US for my copy of HP#7. Maybe I'll bring it with me to Mexico this fall and loan it to anyone who's still not read it by then.

Hey everyone, thanks for the info. I got mine at Sanborns here in Cuernavaca for 429 pesos. It may have been cheaper at Ghandi but I saved the bus fare so it works out.

I finished it Saturday nigth (yep, I'm addicted) and it was well worth it.

The bookstores jillford is referring to are in Colonia Roma near the intersection of Jalapa and Obregon if memory serves...

Even better...Obregon and Cordoba, about two blocks from Jalapa...there's a block of used book stores.
