| And another thing... The school principal says he hopes you "have a good time" working at this school. That is another thing I've never heard in my six years in Japan... A school principal hoping the teachers have a good time. Which high school is it? Kabukicho High School? |

A.S.,
Excellent post! Definitely a troll. One more thing about Betty Lou's post... I've been in plenty of Principal offices, and in every case I've been asked to sit and been served coffee. I can't recall one instance of standing over the desk. |

Rubbish. Harrassment has to have some form of intent for it to be meaningful - you can't claim you were harrassed if the person doing it has/had no idea that X Y or Z may or may not offend you. I'm perfectly willing to believe that the principal may not have even thought about what was on the laptop, and with an abscence of evidence either way who's to say what his intent was? Distasteful for the OP? Clearly. But that's all we can say. |

I don't know if the OP was a troll post or not, but if the situation described in the OP actually happened, it's definitely worth making a stink about. Sure, the teacher might be alienated because of it. If that's the case, quit. No job is worth tolerating if your co-workers or superiors subject you to what you find to be truly offensive. And if one thinks he/she can't find another job and must put up with the intolerable, he/she needs to work on the old self-confidence.
Of course, if I were the one in the situation described in the OP, I probably would've asked "Whatcha watchin'?" |

I meant innocent flirting! Like long ago, a woman would drop her handkerchief to get a guy to pick it up! Or blink a couple of times to show him she is interested. Then I would ask what they the students do now days to get someones attention. This is an innocent lesson!
However, I do wonder if the principal heard of this lesson and took it wrong as you have done! I taught this lesson at another school but within the same district!
When I meant the principal at the other schools, we sat on a couch in front of his desk and drank tea, while talking! The one school in question was completely unique! I am terrified of going back!
I am contemplating quitting! Ive already been warned not to make an issue out of the what is done at the school in question or I will be fired! |

I'm unfamiliar with Japanese code, but there is case law in the US and UK concerning 'hostile' or 'sexualized' work environments.
Intent is not relevant in these types of sexual harassment cases.
Of course, foreign law does not apply in the OP's particular situation, but it's incorrect to assume that in all situations intent must be established to prove a claim of sexual harassment. |

Betty Lou, are you a native English speaker? Also, reduce the number of exclamation marks, it sounds as though you are shouting.
While I don't doubt that some school principals look at porn on their computers (on my last day in my first school the principal asked me which girls I preferred, English, Italian or Japanese, and also how many girlfriends I had - all of which he had a JTE translate for him (another old guy with a bit of a rep for being a perv)) but at the very least he should have switched it off. I'm not saying its all right, but porn and sex play a huge part in this country and often its not seen as being that taboo. I've seen a couple of salarymen looking at porn on their mobiles while on the train, and I've also sneaked a look into the computer room to see some of the kids looking up animae porn.
You could kick up a fuss about it, but quite possibly you'll be ignored as the foreigner who 'doesn't understand' Japanese culture, or something like that. Quitting will make a statement, but it probably won't do you much good. |

I have to agree with cornishmuppet. This is a different culture. One should not judge what people do here in Japan by their home countrys standards. One only has to ride the train one time to know looking at porn is an accepted activity in this culture.
The U.S. is way too up tight about sex. I vaguely remember reading in the newspaper about an incident that happened last year somewhere in the U.S. I believe a substitute teacher was surfing the net in search of a site to teach the class and came across a porn site by accident. She immediately changed the site, but was dismissed and later arrested. Her teachers license suspended. I dont know if she was sentenced or not.
Another example of Americans being too uptight about sex is how congress and the senate spent millions investigating who Clinton had sex with to gather enough evidence to impeach him. Yet, Bush lied to start a costly war, and no impeachment trail and nowhere near the amount of money investigating him. Okay granted the democrats just recently took control of congress and the senate. |

Just as it's totally pointless bringing up case law from other countries with completely different legal systems in a situation where only one side of story is presented by a likely troll when everyone is doing something other than discussing warped legal technicalities.
But hey, knock yourself out, champ. :) |

I'm completely convinced that the OP is a troll! I have a hard time believing anyone with such terrible grammar and punctuation could be an English teacher! Every sentence has been ended with an exclamation mark... awful!!!!
And I have a hard time believing that in the day since the original message was posted, the OP has already been threatened with dismissal. First, an issue like this would never move that fast in Japan. A supervisor would probably take some time to explore different channels, and then might wait for the ALT to cool off a bit and hope that the issue would resolve itself. 24 hours and the supervisor comes back with a "be quiet or you're fired"... highly doubtful. Second, for a potential sexual harrassment complaint, given the growing awareness of the problem, it's absurd that the situation wouldn't be handled more delicately than "be quiet or you're fired".
The first day of teaching at the very end of the semester... the grossly innappropriate behaviour from the Principal... the absence of anyone else accompanying the ALT in the Principal's office... the Principal speaking in English... the questionable physical positioning of the ALT (standing by the desk)... the horrible English grammar from the OP... the history of sex-related posts... the unlikelihood that a "Masters-degree holder" would be an ALT... an old post says that the OP just graduated...
After looking at backposts, it's pretty clear that the OP is Tigerwood. |

Wow! Chris21 makes a lot of sense. I should of noticed how similar this thread is toward his other threads about Nova and making so much money in Thailand. |

I can't say whether or not this is a troll post, but I CAN say the following, (for those who haven't been on the forum all that long):
1) This topic, almost verbatim has come up in the past. A new teacher walks into a kocho sensei's office and the finds the principal either watching or reading porn, or ma$turbating. The new teacher is shocked, wants to resign and posts up her experience on Dave's, asking for advice on what to do next.
2) Each time this topic has come up, the thread has been removed. Why?
3) Because each time this topic has come up, it was posted by known trolls. I know they were trolls because of the IP signature... (Remember, I was a moderator on Dave's at one time. Mods have the capability to do IP address matching, so yeah, we know who you all are... And if you open more accounts on Dave's, the system automatically cross-matches them -- so TRUST ME -- we know who you all are and where you're logging in from...) |

| Yesterday, I had done a search because I vaguely remember a thread similar to this one. Maybe about two years ago, I could of sworn I had read a thread almost exactly the same as this one. I read just about all my past post but couldnt find one about a similar situation. I was beginning to think, I was loosing my mind. Anyway thank you Jim for confirming my suspicion. |
