'Who's going to do the 'allowing'? '
I presume the original post from which I took the question,,,,,,,,,,,referred to Teacher Training establishments, etc.--- the people who decide who's going to graduate from their institutions.
But a better question arises: Should, pedants, be, allowed, to, live?
(Their's quiet a deffrence betwen riting like this, and writing like this:
Should stirrers who can't focus, be allowed to deflect a serious discussion?
Anyway, take up the punctuation question with the Times Ed. Supplement.
It seems a majority came out for common sense (RIP). |

Lots of common sense here - glad of it!
I think there are much more important questions and I thought we'd turned the page from the day where we were so focused on having students cross their ts and dot their i"s" that we didn't give them/help them with, the necessary critical thinking nor motivational will to succeed.
I don't judge a teacher solely on how he/she spells. It all dependss so much on the context, we can't judge. So for me, the question is mute.

The complaints about teachers not being able to spell is based on a huge incidence of lack of knowledge of spelling (again, excluding typos).
I would think common sense resided in teaching both spelling and critical thinking, not either/or. That being the case, there is no opposition and this is not a valid defense for bad spellers.
Just because it's funny and true:

Common Sense
In Memorium
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend by the name of Common Sense.
No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.
He will be remembered as having cultivated valued lessons such as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm and that life isn't always fair.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not kids, are in charge). His health began to rapidly deteriorate when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place.
Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch, and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student only worsened his condition. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student but could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Finally, Common sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses and criminals received better treatment than their victims.
Common Sense finally gave up the ghost after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, spilled a bit in her lap, and was awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by two stepbrothers; My Rights and Ima Whiner. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. |

rusmeister, you forgot to cite your source for the "Common Sense" piece:
http://www.wowzone.com/common_sense.htm
You lifted it (spelling errors and all) from the URL above. The original author was Lynda Penning Gatelaro. |

Thank you Henry!
Actually, no I didn't lift it from that URL. If you google the quote, you'll find that it's all over the Net and that a great many people have posted it and not quoted their source.
My goodness, there must be something I said that really bothers you to have you keep coming back and picking at me for anything that remotely looks like an error!
Well, keep picking. I think my skin's thick enough.
BTW, did you enjoy the 'Common Sense' piece? |
