Here's a link to Tom Leonard's poetry. He writes in the Glasgow vernacular, which he uses to express complex thoughts and emotions and deal with a wide range of social and political issues. Maybe he will write one in celebration of wee James McFadden's goal against France.

Nice link but the film was set in Leith in Edinburgh. |
Yes, as everyone well knows, but Robert Carlyle is from Glasgow, and he was speaking Glaswegian dialect in that scene, as he does in the rest of the film. |

Can you transcribe that scene for us all then? If you can catch more than 20% of that monologue I'll eat my hat! You might well think you know what he is saying, but in fact I doubt if you have the slightest idea. And, to the extent that you are able to fathom out what he is saying then it is purely as a result of your having previously seen the US version with its slower, less colloquial, and non-Glaswegian dialect audio track. |

Well, aren't you friendly. And no, thank you, I do not wish to spend time on transcriptions.
Nor, frankly, to spend any further time responding to insults.
Best,
Justin |

Where on earth is the 'insult'? I merely pointed out that it is highly unlikely that anyone outside of the UK and perhaps even outside of Scotland, and perhaps arguably outside of the council estates (the schemes ) of Glasgow has a clue as to what is being said in the monologue to which I refer (the (in)famous, 'And after that, well, the game was mine' Begbie pub scene).
It is easy for you to claim that you understand every single word, after all, words are cheap, but when you are asked to prove that you can you (perhaps not mysteriously) react in an adverse manner and begin to accuse people of having insulted you. You talked the talk but when a fellow poster asked that you put your money where your (large) mouth is and walk the walk you immediately begin to declare foul play. I do not believe you have a clue what he is saying you really do not. It is just that you are afraid of admitting it. (After all, you cannot find a transcript on the web, can you?)
The burden of proof is with you. Put up or shut up! |
