I wasn't prepared for how formal it would be. I was the most under-dressed with a suit jacket, shirt and no tie. So make sure to wear the full get-up: pants/skirt, dress shoes, dress shirt, suit jacket, tie, etc. |
I thought that much was obvious or else I would have made mention of it. For future reference, put on a tie etc for EVERY job interview related to Japan. |
Indeed, I should have known as much. I guess I was so wrapped up in everything else I missed the obvious point that Japanese companies are big on formality. |
Yep, wear a tie. Also don't turn up at the interview naked from the waist down. Have a shower and a shave and don't urinate on the floor. I thought I would just point those things out in case they weren't obvious. |

I think I would wear a tie to just about any interview not just one for a Japanese company. If you turn up feeling overdressed you can always take the tie off. If you turn up without one and feel underdressed then what do you do? |

Most of my job interviews previously were for contract gigs at news outlets, and formality is mostly frowned upon in the places I was going to so I suppose I fell out of practise.
ps You guys sure are big on that rolling-eye emoticon |

I have a theory that the number of rolly-eyed "you-are-a-loser" emoticons increases proportionately to the amount of time the emoticon user has spent in Japan. Does "seniority" (or the illusion of it) breed sarcastic contempt? Hmm...
In any case, let us know the outcome of your interview. I hope it went well.

Just kidding. It has nothing to do with feeling superior. I use it whenever I think it's justified. |
