Suggestion Darotker, with such a negative attitude about Hess it makes me wonder if this is a Troll post, Another persons continuing tirade against Hess, or someone who really needs to think about another country than Taiwan.

Everyone wishing to leave, wow such a large judgement from one not here. I have never worked for HESS but i knew many who did, some for seven or eight years. MAny also how did 2 or 3 years then found other more lucrative work.

I wish you luck finding that PERFECT first job.

JZer's comments about Hess and start uploans is really something that can be discussed more and more. Personally, I think it's a very clever ploy of Hess, one not to attract broke people but to help the settling in process, because a housing deposit and rent, prior to any income necessitates a chunky volume of savings to fall back on. From my own perspective I wish the university I worked at would have done such a thing to help me when I first arrived. All I got was 2 free nights in a crappy hotel full or roaches and then the bills arrived!

I would like to state that Darokter adds to the overall debate but he doesn't. I knew some Hess people and most people knew what they were getting into, acceted it and tolerated the work, and were happy. I knew people like BJ who had been at Hess for years so the argument that it's a revolving door is not quite true. For anyone out for a year's experience in Taiwan, and limited TEFL experience then Hess is a decent enough starting point. As much as Hess isn't great, there's worse companies.

Ive been doing a little job hunting and have been looking at various school websites.

Thats when I came across the Hess site, which starts with "Daring To Dream'. Catchy eh.

After doing lots of research but still not knowing much (probably like any other person looking for their 1st job in Taiwan) I thought Id read their Visa information section. Its really informative. Here are a few lines that caught my eye.

1. we are serious about following the law.

2. .you are assured your employment will be legal after arriving in Taiwan.

Wow, I feel much better now. Id read so many bad things about Hess on Daves ESL so its a relief to read that they are an honest, caring and trustworthy employer. Nice work Hess we need more companies like you! You fly the flag for us teachers and we respect the fact you are looking out for us new job hunters. Thanks!

Oh, wait there.didnt I just read on the Hess website that they offer kindergarten teaching positions? Thats strange. Most people know that teaching kindergarten is completely illegal and you can get deported if you get caught.

Hess isnt beyond Taiwan law, is it? But surely they arent lying or trying to deceive me are they? I thought they were serious about following the law. I thought they were reassuring me that my employment will be legal. Would they really have me think I was working legally when they knew I was working illegally?

That would be low, scum, desperate, shameless AND a very good reason to find an employer that at least told me the truth so I could make an informed decision for myself.

My vedict:
Hess website appearance = glossy.
Hess credibility = zero.

Sad

I swear I saw this exact post about a year ago.

edit: doh, it was the post from a year ago...derrrr

I worked for Hess for over 2 years. I never worked for their Kindergarten (thank God), but from what I heard, the way they got around the law was by telling the government that the foreign teachers were not the actual teachers at the kindgerarten, but basically the equivalent of "guest speakers." Of course, this was total BS.

Hess also doesn't report your salary accurately. I once found a government form with my name on it which said I made 400NT an hour. (I actually made 600). When I asked them about it, they said "Oh, that's just what we tell the government."

Hess is just as sneaky as any other bushiban.
