...yes, good point. i suppose very different things.

what i was thinking about was that it is illegal for a native English teacher to date a student?? this im not sure about... for e.g., a native Mexican teacher dating a current student?? so, then here comes this gringo marching into town and starts dating students every semester.

then, the native goes marching over to the director and says, "What's the deal with this? He / She can go around with anyone they want?" i would just hope we try to adhere to the same rules that apply to natives, whether it's drinking, drugs, dating, etc.

an even weirder thing was that for 2-3 years at my university we weren't allowed to talk about politics nor religion??

sometimes illegal / advisable are pretty close. for e.g., you can't say the F word in the middle of a church service.

i think what we are talking about here are "norms"? norms aren't enforcable, but people tend to use their best judgement....

I have seen schools in Mexico with rules about not dating students. However, I don't think these are enforced, as long as the relationship is discreet and happens away from school. Personally, I wouldn't do it unless it were a really special person, but that's just because it can cause so many unnecessary complications.

I've been really impressed with the people (most of them) posting on Dave's. I've spent hours and hours reading postings all over the board. Utterly fascinating. Someone should write a book about the whole EFL/ESL culture...maybe even a movie. Seriously.

If you think the posts warrant a movie, just you wait until you are here! Very Happy

What about a guy over 60, teaching independently, with a blond ponytail, on the east coast? Would the age and ponytail combine to turn some customers away?
