Firstly
Kiev is getting expensive for apartmnents, $500 dollars is normal now for a one room place!
$10 dollars per hour is a minimum that they should be offering for a Native English teacher
And I have never been accused of being a spy:)) Except to look at girls:)))

I only found one language school that offered to sponsor a work visa. However, first I had to give them $1000 USD to take their CELTA course since they don't recognize my TEFL cert. from a respectable US training program or my academic and professional experience. I also have taught English for 2 years.

As for housing, I did find an American who has been here over a year now, and he verified that $500 is the going rate for a one bedroom near a metro station that is close to the center.

BTW, is it common to have drunk men accuse you of being a spy in the Ukraine or is it just me? This is happening on a regular basis. The last guy threw a punch which missed me by 2 feet. I think he was seeing double and tried to hit the imaginary spy:) He then stumbled into a babushka who started clubbing him with her umbrella. If it wasn't happening to me, it would have been hilarious!

What's your visa status if you don't mind my asking? I take it that you are in Kiev? I am still in a temp. flat and have a line on a few places in the $450 range. It remains to be seen whether I will get that price.

As for the spy thing, an ex-pat who has been here for some time explained that it was more of a Russian vs. Ukrainian thing. This being the Russian part of Kiev, the local Russians feel abused by the West as well as by the ethnic Ukrainians. Add vodka to the mix, and this is what you get.

Poland is beginning to look better all the time!

Well, first of all my visa is a normal business visa, Maybe that will change soon.
I am in Kiev and love it here, It is best if you try to find a place have a local friend look, if you don't have one of those find a girl, caht her up, practice English and she will porbably go out of her way to help you Smile)
$450 for a flat is not unreasonable for a one room, you just have to search and be lucky, but they are getting more and more expensive

The Spy thing, well, I was speaking to my girlfriend last night about it and she suggested that you stop asking for nuclear secrets and they will stop accusing you of being a spy!!!! Smile)) Very Happy
I have heard of no such thing here, how the hell do you get yourself into this situation??? Maybe don't drink with the Ukrainain boys, just stick to the girls?

Just my bad luck I suppose! Another American has encountered the spy thing here. Perhaps in Kiev, they are more comfortable with foreigners.

Rogan,

Yes, I am aware that I am a foreigner here, and this should be clear from reading my posts.

Do you drink heavily before posting or have difficulty with written English?
