Twisting--I think it was Che Guevara in Guatemala City. He lved there for about a year until the US overthrew the government of Arbenz. |

I rented a lovely apartment in Chimbote, Peru in a good part of town for US$100 per month, last year. Outside the big cities you can find very cheap accomodation, smaller placer also offer a generally safer and more authentic experience. |

You're right--it was Che Guevara. But I thot it was Castro too? Hmmmm--maybe I'm confused |

Sorry, Twistie, but you are confused. The CIA overthrew the government of Arbenz in 1954--when Che was in Guatemala City.
Fidel Castro was in jail in Cuba from July of 1953 (after the failed assault on the cuartel Moncada on July 26) until May of 1955 when he was given the benefit of an amnesty (he came to Mexico in July of the same year.)
Fidel met Che in Mexico City--where he (Che) was working as a street photographer. |

Apparently, Hunter S. Thompson just moved into a place with Elvis, Henry Miller, and William S. Burroughs, just outside Guatemala City... him moving in dropped the rent to under a $100. Unreal. |
