You got some good music there, J-pop. How lucky! I know of all, but Rebecca. And I know of Amuro Namie, but I'm not sure about that album...is that the one with "Can you celebrate?"? or is it the one with, "Chase the chance"?

I'm sure you know Amuro's story, right? Pretty scandalous! I wonder who has replaced her as Japan's sweetheart of pop.

I've never heard of Chihiro Onitsuka or Mongol Sou.

And of course I know "Da pump". Aren't they from Okinawa?

--Yes, that's the album (Amuro Namie). BOTH of those songs are on it. That is one of four of her albums I have. Other ones:
"Genius 2000,"
"break the rules," and
"Love Enhanced," (a collection of re-mixed singles).

Yes, I know the story. When first living there, the story was more or less in full gear (fall, 98?). What a riot. NHK carried several stories, showing dozens (hundreds?) of news reporters, fans, groupies, camping outside her hotel. Some times the reporters hired helicopters to try & get closer to her. Truly wild.

There are several "new faces" record companies are trying to put forward, to replace her I think. However, she was on several big tv specials--during the World Soccer Matches & then also on several of the Holiday specials (Christmas, New Years) later in the year. So, she is still popular & in demand. She's been trying to make a comeback, of sorts, I believe.

One of the new faces they were promoting, big-time, when I was there last time is, Mika Nakashima. She won "New Artist of the year Award" (awarded on the New Year's NHK special) for 2002, with a couple of huge hits off her first album, "Blue." I have it. A couple of the hits off that album: "Will," "Helpless Rain," and "Crescent Moon."

I decided to buy the ablum (Blue) after listening to the very first cut, while in a record store in Hiroshima. Have you ever heard a native Japanese sing, "Amazing Grace"? I was shocked cuz I didn't know that song was even on the album, as it receive zero airplay, I think. It's the first song (all in English) on that album. Most of the other songs are japanese or a combo, I call it "Nihonglish." (you first heard it here, folks! Laughing )

Another brand new artist (for me, anyway) I picked up is, Yuki Koyanagi. I think she is a quite big act, with at least 5, 6 (more?) albums out. I picked up the CD, "Freedom." Excellent. Her voice is one of the strongest ones I've heard for a Japanese singer. She can belt it out.

"Shinin' Day" & "I don't want to be Crazy," are 2 of my favorites, but there are couple others on that CD that are quite good, too.

"DaPump," honestly, I don't know if they're from Okinawa or not. Maybe. Anyone else know? I get a kick out of some of their "rap," type songs. I don't think any of em plays an instrument . Could be wrong, but I've never seen any of them playing any musical instrument.

To J-pop and 3rd eye and any other fan out there:

I'm having trouble locating a song because I can't remember the artist. What I can tell you is that it was a hit in 1997. The title was in Japanese then in English parenthesis (Animals) Do you know what song I'm talking about?

On another note....Did you see Kill Bill Volume 1? I thought for sure that punk group was Shonen Knife but it wasn't. I think they are called 123s or something like that.

And just because I such a total "miha" can anyone update me on my boys from Smap? So, Kimura had a kid with that other singer...did they ever marry? I also heard that Kusanagi-kun is fluent in Korean and has caused a whole "Korean boom". Any other news? (hee-hee) Laughing

And did Amuro ever make the awaited "come back" like she was supposed to? Last note...here in the states there is a new cartoon called "hai hai puffy amiyumi"! Can you believe it?

Most music you would ever see on TV in Japan is pure crap. That doesn't mean that there isn't any good music in Japan.

Love Psychedelico is wonderful.

Please enjoy.
