Duffy raises a very valid point here, Flutterbayou.
Scope for promoting extra curricular reading during MoHE College classtime will be severely limited.
That is why I included the link to the AWL in my earlier post. The AWL is the target set of vocabulary, as recommended by Hawthorn, for our prospective undergraduates to digest.
However, you will meet with eager students outside of class; and there may be opportunities to promote a selection of easy readers to the motivated.
As an aside, I heard a rumour recently that Ladybirds were flying off the shelves (please pardon the pun) of Sohar University's library. Could a Sohar Uni-based poster confirm or deny this rumour? |

Duffy, I'm not talking about changing curriculae.
When I ask for ancillary reading ideas, the emphasis is on ancillary. At a few of the colleges and unis where I've taught, we started reading clubs for girls who aren't interested or cannot participate in sports. This concept worked out well with some of the female Saudi students in the States because they wanted to express their imaginations while interpreting stories and, eventually, telling their own. It's that Alice Walker crazy quilt idea....
Geronimo, I've implemented the academic word list for about 17 years and usually carry a copy of McGraw Hill's Quest: Reading and Writing for the Academic World. Portions of the list appear in the appendices of each of the four levels, in case you're interested
HOWEVER, it is non-academic reading that I'm interested in instilling, because book clubs (story clubs) generate conversation and exchanges of ideas, which together stimulate writing... and the joy of language! |
