The problem is that the Mainland Chinese often have little idea how to teach their language to foreigners, particularly at the beginning levels. If you have not previously studied Mandarin, you may find the "courses" offered by many of these "schools" to be rather heavy going and of very limited use. It would probably be better to have a grasp of at least the basics before you go to China, as this will enable you to learn much faster once you are in "total immersion" mode. Also be aware that there is a dearth of decent study materials available on the Mainland - again, particularly at the lower levels. You may want to take some with you from home. |
