Will applying with a contract that will be void during the process of the CoE for my wife null the application, therefore, denying my wife that chance of being with me in Japan?

It doesn't look like anyone is going to be able to give you the definitive answer you are looking for. At a guess I would say technically if the company with whom you break contract communicate with the immigration office then you could have trouble but I have never seen this happen. Also, when someone leaves a company a year or two into a three year working visa this doesn't alter their visa status (unless they decide to move into a profession which falls under a different visa category). I am not saying this means things are the same with a CoE but it gives you an idea about the amount of communication that needs to take place between company and immigration office i.e. not much.

But you have been offered some good advice on this page by people who know what they are talking about. I would echo their sentiments. I think you will be looking at most at a 7 week separation but most probably a lot less: you come to Japan, write a letter of invitation for your wife to get a tourist visa - she applies, then comes over... depending on the speed of the Japanese embassy in Beijing it could all be ready in a couple of weeks.

Let us know how you get on!

Now I am confused. Can I easily just write a letter of invitation for her to get a tourist visa, then simply change that over to a dependent visa in country after applying for her CoE?

What is needed for this invitation letter? I think I need to make another phone call to immigration.

Also, remember, my wife is Chinese. This makes things more complicated with the influx of Chinese people in Japan and their reputation.

Edit: After looking at the immigration website again, I noticed a link to a pdf that states the tourist visa requirements for foreign nationals other than Phillipines, China, and NIS Russia. Unfortunately, there is no information for Chinese ctizens.
