Those of you that have experienced working with Buckland- did you find you could improve your Chinese while you were there teaching?

I worked at Buckland two years ago as well and when I first came to China my Chinese was nonexistent. I told my school I was assigned to that I wanted my Chinese lessons, they hooked me up with a teacher who taught me pinyin really well which was a pretty good foundation and got me started. He didn't teach me very long because.......he didn't get paid to do it so he didn't want to do it.

Basically though, if you want to learn Chinese you can learn it at any place you go. It's easy to find students and people to teach you. Like I said, the "free Chinese lessons" shouldn't be the selling point.

If you want lessons you will need to find a real teacher and pay for them. Just my opinion.

Agree. I have had a few free Chinese lessons. None were ever with someone who could teach, even though some claimed to be qualified to do so. It either seemed to be a list of useless words without context to memorise, or a dialogue with 30 new lexical items. As we all should know, just because people are native speakers, it doesnt mean they can teach the language.
