WHO'S 'not aware' in this discussion? It's not possible for anyone with even as little as five years of experience in the Gulf to be unaware that there are vast anomalies in the area of recruitment and placement. And no-one with any idea of the meaning of 'justice' or 'equality' could make a case for the justification of these anomalies. Those of us who've been in the region for decades are very aware indeed of what goes on--- I personally have no problem with an employer recruiting people with lower qualifications than s/he advertises for, AS LONG AS S/HE THEN ADJUSTS UPWARDS the grade/ level of those who do. All of us have seen situations where people with extensive qualifications and experience (very valid experience) have been put on a lower scale than people with far less valid background. (I'll leave it to yourself to figure out why this can happen.) You can hardly expect us to be happy about such injustice. Indeed, if it weren't for fora like this, we wouldn't even be able to discuss it anywhere. |

Who is 'you people?' Are you in a category comprised of one? I see no evidence that anyone 'has a gripe with them'.
Seems you are just unwilling to accept that, yes, maybe MA TESOL is the preferred, but if one has almost two decades of PROVEN class experience, professional development, a BA and goodness knows what else to show potential employers, what the heck is wrong with that! Take your blinkers off you lot. Incidentally, if you don't know what "selling yourself" actually means in context of the subject at hand, go take a business course or something! |
Time to take that chill pill, lotsa. Ranting on the weekend at 'you lot' won't do your blood pressure any good. A reactionary approach coupled with fullsome arrogance will not improve the quality of your sojourn in the Gulf. |

Just can't resist 'flaming'. I'm new to the Gulf region. I've got an MATEFL (and a CELTA, training done through the British Council). The quality of the English language in this thread is appalling. I don't think any of you passed 'O' levels, in which case you are all frauds. So I must say, how in the world can you cast stones at, or even coherently question, others? After coming to the Gulf region, I haven't seen so much petty back-biting (not only on the net) since leaving civil service employment long ago. I think it has something to do with the relative employment security we enjoy here, not unlike civil service. Such security seems to breed a feeling of 'protecting the turf' and, perversely, close scrutiny of all newcomers. I'd like to use a popular expletive to some of my long-entenched co-workers, but I like to think I can express myself without resorting to banalities. |

That last post was a little harsh. I have no business on this thread in the first place. When I made that post, I was projecting my disgust at a few of my co-workers onto the posters on this thread. I apologize; it's not so much the quality of the English language on this thread, as the quality of the discussion. The level of 'in-group chuminess' struck a chord. I quite like my current employment, and am only surprised at how the (relatively) long-term westerners here are so 'clubby' (sorry for the banality). I'm at the low-end of the pay scale, and couldn't care less. I make a decent salary, am happy with that and the conditions of work, and can't understand why anyone would waste their energy trying to investigate others' conditions of employment. But perhaps that's because I have a life (such as posting on Dave's ). |
