You will probably find they will want to see the originals at some point.
Another thing you will need is proof of employment in the various schools in which you have taught. You will need this so they can calculate your pay. Only full time employment counts.

I have a statement from the Education Department in New South Wales that says that I was employed full time between certain dates. When I rang them to request further details they said that they didn't have the time to list each school and the dates that I was employed in each.(I have taught at more than 10 different schools in different regions over a period of more than 25 years.) What I also have is a statement saying that I am approved for supply work in New South Wales at the maximum pay rate for a 4 year-trained teacher. The latter should give some indication of the rate of pay I am entitled to if I am successful.

SydGirl2:
In any other place in the world, your statements would likely be acceptable, but in HK the minion who looks at documents for NET applications is looking for specific wording. If it's not there, the document is not accepted.

I was in the NET scheme for a few years and then had a break before returning. My principal wrote a letter of reference for me when I left after the first contracts which I used when re-applying as proof that I had been previously employed in the NET scheme. However, the principal had not stated that I was employed as a full-time NET, so I was required to provide another letter from him stating that I had been employed full-time in the NET scheme..... even though there has never been a part-time NET in the NET scheme....

Don't bank on it. I was only employed in one school in England for 17years before I came to Hong Kong. It wasn't enough for the Authority that had employed me to state that I had been employed but them, I had to get the school to state the years I was there and the classes I had taught. It was over 20 years ago and I was lucky that there was still one teacher at the school who had taught with me and she wrote a letter for me with the information on that they wanted.
If you have taught for a long time you only need to cover the 15 years that will take you to the top of the scale - provided that it is post degree.

And only full-time employment before, I think, 5pm (or something like that). For some unknown reason anything after that time does not, in the eyes of the EMB/EDB, count as experience.

As regards the sheer amount of paperwork you need, I know of one chap who even had to produce documentary evidence of the primary school(s) he attended as a lad some 30-odd years ago!

I am a little concerned about all this waiting. If I go to the interview later this month and then I don't hear from them until July or August. I just don't know, I tend to travel in the summer months. I am not hanging around here in California waiting for their phone call. I have no problem providing all the originals of everything they need. Once thing I have is ALL the proper documentation. I just want to know when I would be expected to go. I need to decide if I should accept another position here or hold out hoping to get a contract in HK. I would be in a pickle if I started working here and then I heard from HK and they expected me to quit my job and fly out. How much notice will they give you? Walking out on a contract here in California is like slitting my throat should I ever want a job here again.

Yes, it is an issue, and is an issue that has been raised on numerous occasions with the relevant bodies and authorities. Unfortunately, through a confluence of pig-ignorance and extreme self-centredness, few if any members of such organizations and institutions have come to see that HK is not the centre of the galaxy and that the universe does not revolve around them. It is up to you to dance to their tune.

Do not make the mistake of thinking that all because HK has a glitzy modern image that the place and its operations are well organised, for nothing could be further from the truth. The appearance is just a facade. It is still ultimately China and is still Asia and so is essentially chaotic in most regards.

Thanks for the info, Ann. Can you post a link to a site that shows salaries according to years of experience and level of education?

I'll be arriving in HK toward the end of this month for my interview, so any information you (or anyone can offer) about a reasonably priced hotel not too far from the Education Bureau, in a lively part of town, would be gratefully welcomed.

I don't think there is one!
If you look on hkpnets.org you will find all the information you need and links to all the relevant sites.

Hmmm...I followed the link anninhk supplied and to another link that took me to a cryptic salary scale page. Where to find the secret decoder code?

http://www.csb.gov.hk/english/admin/pay/42.html

I liked the size of the numbers but have no idea how, for example, point 48 differs from point 49. Does the teacher at point 48 qualify for point 49 by taking five graduate courses? By teaching an additional three years?

Who has the secret decoder ring?

The difference between Point 48 and Point 49 is about $3,000 a month (not especially significant if one is already on some $80,000 HK a month!).

While SNETs are able to progress higher up the Master Pay Scale than PNETs (who max out at point 29) I don't think SNET can progress to point 48 - I believe that end of the scale is for civil servants only.

For those of you lucky enough to have received an Interview for appointment with the PNET scheme you are fortunate. I am still waiting.

I know this thread has long since lay dormant, but sibertiger, if you're out there, could you tell me what agency interviewed you in Brisbane for SNET? I'm in the same city, and I'd like to track down the agency and visit with them.

Thanks.
