....Jake, i could sense the sarcasm in your 'bobby' post...but, wanted to give the benefit of the doubt first.

as for straying off-topic...you brought up the topic of this anger towards the teenagers and youth of today.

as for L.America...you probably won't find that kind of lethargic, hanging-out, doing-nothing, wise-crack, up-to-no-good teenagers in L.America. they're generally happier and have a lot more energy.

as for the Beatles being relevant to this post, i believe they are. this slacker, mouthy, who-cares type of teenager started in the late 50's and early 60's in England. it was a break from the formality of post-WWII society. John started it, read about his history at his primary and secondary schools.

you might also want to take a look at Revolution in the Head by Ian McDonald and see just how expansive The Beatles 'effect' had on society and the world. there's a reason John said, "We're more popular than Jesus".

so, this is why your post is pertinent to society in L.America. because, i assume you're trying to escape the U.K. for some other type of utopian paradise only to return in 4 years and find it the same.

John, that's the finest use of the famed British sarcasm I've ever seen from a colonist.

You gotta lay off the sarcy-asm, man. You're making my head hurt!

But seriously- they get called different things, and may have slightly different past-times, but they're everywhere.

In Spain, "chavales" is actually probably a pretty close equivalent.

"Guambra," literally meaning a young person, is used here.

I've heard a Francisized version of "hooligan" in France, but as that was during the 98 world cup, it was probably heavily influenced by the English language and the England crowd- don't know if the use has survived.

Best,
Justin

In Chile they're called flaite. This is the generic term for a Chilean townie scum or skiv (as we call them in Dorset). They're not as bad as the English version but they're not much better. The random violence is less of an issue here in Chile though.

This link gives a pretty damn funny explanation:
