I've just got back from TESOL arabia, where I managed to speak to a senior member of the BAE recruiting staff.

Here is the truth, as opposed to Scot's chemically induced fantasies.

Despite its name BAE actually employs 44,000 Americans and 36,000 Brits. He offered no information about other nationalities, but can we finally put this thread to bed.

There is NO, repeat NO, likelihood of American applicants for teaching positions with BAE Systems being rejected on the grounds of their nationality.

To be fair, I don't believe that Scot ever claimed that they didn't hire non-Brits, but suggested that there would be preference for Brits. I suspect that is still true. If they had one opening - and two applicants of relatively equal quals - one Brit and one not, I suspect that the Brit would be first choice.

This happens all over the Gulf, with the favored nationality differing.

BTW... you aren't suggesting that they have thousands of EFL teachers, are you? It would have been more meaningful for us if the numbers given were only for teachers.

BAE Systems actually sells more weapons to the US government than to the UK government. It has taken over a large number of US firms.

With regard to McBeath's point I have never seen a BAE ad that excluded Americans. They merely said you would be paid in sterling to a UK bank account, and the interview would be in Preston.

I worked at BAE from 1993 - 1995. When I was there, there were a number of nationalities - Sudanese, Eqyptian, Jordanian, Austrailian, British, Canadian etc..
Is this still the case?
I worked with over 150 teachers in the SEL - school of English Language and TSI - Technical Studies Institute in Dhahran. Now there are also jobs in Riyadh and other locations.
The thousands of people employed are also employed on the line - the Air Force - admin etc..

I left SEL in August last year. As you say, there were at least 150 teachers at SEL, TSI, Dammam.

I was NEVER sure how many nationalities were there, so I don't know if there were any Egyptians or Jordanians. I am positive there were Sudanese.

At TESOL Arabia 2008, I met two of my former teaching colleagues. One comes from New Zealand, the other from New York.

This whole debate started because one know-nothing from KFUPM decided to parade his prejudiced ignorance around the web, claiming the moral high ground because he accepts Saudi money for teaching on the other side of the wall from the Knig Abdulaziz Air Base.
