Griff-james, you should learn from this forum, there are a lot of information which are true, and which, unfortunately you ignore.
BTW, who is Sacha Baron-Cohen?? |

Cleopatra - you are absolutely right. I apologise. The Frech tourists were shot in early 2007, which rather supports my point that there are still militants/terrorists/members of deviant groups still out there.
I left KSA in August last year. So let me ask a few question.
Have the Saudi authoritiues have dismantled the concrete barriers that they had erected to defend their police stations from car bombers? Have they stopped the police check-points on the road between Dammam and the King Fahad International Airport? Have they stopped setting up random police checks? Have they stopped manning rather temporary looking check pioints, complete with stinger barriers, on the streets that run outside properties used by members of the royal family?
If they have not, then the security situation is still tense.
You find none of these things in Bahrain, the Emirates or Oman. It may be that people in KSA are so used to all this that they have stopped noticing it. |

Really? You can just stroll up to the King's home and walk in for coffee? Odd, particularly because the opposition to the ruling family is far more organised and widespread in Bahrain than it is in KSA.
But, there is no doubt that there is potential for unrest in KSA. I just don't think that the 'deviants' are mainly focussed on sweaty joggers. That's why I think it's rather misleading to tell a possible future resident here that the 'security situation is extremely tense' as it gives the impression that every 'expat' is going to have to put his life at risk every time he ventures off the compound. It simply isn't so. |

We certainly don't want to overstate the security issue in KSA, but the only concrete barriers that I saw in Oman or the UAE were around the American Embassies and residences. Of course, I never made a try for tea with any of the rulers, but they may have them around their residences these days. (but maybe not...)
Kuwait has barriers about and lots of security checks... random stops on the street, but they always waved Westerners through with no stop.

Since they clearly weren't checking the documents or asking the nationalities of those they 'waved through', presumably by "Westerners" you mean "whites"? |

Yes... I should have put "Westerners" in quotes... and actually they rarely stopped women of any skin hue. Of course they were looking for illegals... few of whom are female or white.

Sacha Baron- Cohen is a wild, crazy & controversial comedian/ actor who challenges stereotypes within western society.
However I am not quite sure if Griff-Jame's comparison of Sacha Baron-Cohen to 007 was meant as a compliment or as a sarcastic retort |

Actually, I think he panders to them.
Former Soviet Central Asians as overweight, primitive tractor drivers? Americans as simple-minded and xenophobic? Where's the 'challenge' there? |

Yes Cleo, I'd say you have a valid point there...sorry 007 doesn't appear to be a compliment after all... |

| And I agree that Sacha Cohen (Borat) reinforces stereotypes. What else would you expect from a "comedian" with his background ? |

It seems Baron Cohen is just another English public school boy who hates Uncle Sam!
Cohen is messing with Uncle Sam; and Uncle Sam is going to mess with him., and I am going to mess with both of them.
One Evangelist from UPC camp of Mississippi said God CAN & WILL make sure Cohen is taken care of without a lawsuit. |
