Yeah I like that too about Mexico City. It's rather a bunch of small cities than one megalopolis. I liked your area MO for that, when I lived there, and like Roma a lot for it too now. Not intrusive, but always quick to say hi, how ya been?
Speaking of traffic, Guadalajara is the worst place in the country I've ever been for traffic. It's busy busy here in DF, true enough, but the city has so much public transport it's easy and quick to get around. I could never get anywhere very quickly in GDL. They really should expand that metro. |

Exactly. And you can't help but achieve 'minor celebrity status' in a small town either or end up teaching the same students in different schools! |

Really? Did not know that. Well I haven't lived in the DF only visited. I guess the traffic does suck here now that you mention it. |

I'm originally from New York City; good with cities. The most opportunity for just about everything.
I was just teaching in a remote area in Thailand, outside of Bangkok. I was one of two "white" people in town. We were celebrities, and couldn't have been more uncomfortable. Local storeowners, restaurant employees, maintance men, knew my damn apartment number without me telling them! F------ scary! Especially for a woman alone. And I don't scare easily. |

Too bad I can't offer to share my apartment because I think we have similar natures - my apartment is barely big enough for me! But if you end up moving to Mexico City, most everyone living here will offer you a hearty welcome and also give you lots of breathing room, even if you end up living in a neighborhood nearby. |

MO39, thanks for that.
As soon as I do line up a place, and it really looks like Mexico City, I will be on a plane. When I was living outside of Bangkok, there was a great website called AJARN. It was primarily for English teachers in Bangkok, but it also listed different jobs for English speakers. Anything like that for Mexico? I love craigslist (sold my NYC apartment from it, found my LA apartments, bought three cars...) but the Mexico one is nothing like the main cities in the states. |

| Goto Toluca, best place ever to teach English and you can rent a nice 2 bedroom apartment in a great area for under $150 dollars a month.... man save up $3000 in the bank and you wouldn't have to work for a WHOLE YEAR. |

What makes it so great in regards to teaching?
I have never meet a person who is happy living there, as I have been told it is very "small town" but on a large scale.
However, you certainly can find cheap places to live. I have a friend who pays about 1/3 of what I pay for rent, and she is renting a two bedroom house, utilities included. |

There are a lot of teaching opportunities in Guadalajara but the city is kind of an urban planning disaster and traffic is a major symptom of that. There is, however, a very large population of foreign English teachers there so you will never feel completely alone. I've found there to be more opportunity, actually, in Monterrey, in part because nobody wants to come here. The traffic isn't as bad as Guadalajara but the city is infamous for being Americanized (In my opinion, GDL is just as Americanized if not more).
I think Guadalajara is also very conservative in comparison to Mexico City. |

Speaking for myself here, one is the "Americanized" issue. I really felt like Mty was just another city of the States, because is seemed like a lot of people, and students that I knew were always going there (usually to shop, and vacation). Of course, that is not true of the entire population.
The other issue for me is location. I dont like that area of the country. And I really dont like it now that I live in DF. It is just too close to the border, and too far from Mexican cities. |

Mexico City all the way! I wouldn't want to live in another place in Mexico. I have and I got bored, fast! There is always something going on here.
There are an endless variety of places to work. Schools and students are everywhere. The public transport system is good and getting better. The crime rate seems to be under control and I haven't had any major problems here.
I think the weather is one of the top reasons to be in DF. It usually doesn't get super hot like nothern Mexico and its not humid like the south and coastal areas.
Come to DF (or nearby Mexico State) and live the adventure! |

Can you put in a good word with Marcelo for me? I'll even ride a bicycle around if they let me paint it DF/PRD yellow and put some slogans on it! (Ciudad de Mxico, Capital en Movimiento)!
Thanks |
