It never hurts to show employers that you have the initiative to get some training. Not just because it is required (or not) but because you want to know how to TEACH well.

In spite of the marketing campaigns of some online courses - I've absolutely never heard of an employer saying, for example, we will accept this online certification and not that one. Not ever.

Some employers in some countries sometimes DO want an in-classroom course with observed teaching practice. But even then in Europe, for example, SOME employers want a CELTA versus a TEFL International - but that is Europe where CELTA has held sway for 100 years probably and that is in-classroom and not online. Most of the rest of the world is happy you got some training and isn't very concerned about name brand, or often is not even familiar with the different brands.

Almost all certifications have quite similar content and that is because what you need to know is fairly specific. It is all presented it in slightly different manners. Some add in a lot of fluff and filler and philosophy (with long discussions about WHY you liked Miss Hollis in third grade but hated Mr. Roberts in sixth grade, etc), others don't.

But generally, everyone is going to give you a good overview of method(s) and lesson planning. Some will be more rigorous than others about your knowledge of grammar and so on.

It's not rocket science it is really just applied method.

It's a decent cert. Where are you planning to go? SOme places prefer just a BA and native teacher. YOu could teach for a year, then get a cert.
Except that the link went to a page that showed that the requested page could not be found.

Before some one states the obvious that a live, in person, on site 120+ hour course with practicum is really a base line to start from.... I agree.... I will take a live course in Asia before beginning to work.

But to get my foot in a few more doors, would it make sense to have some English Teaching Certificate as I make inquires now.

If you're not going to do an entirely on-site course, then do a course that at least has an on-site teaching practicum with real ESL students. A course like this one: http://www.ontesol.com/index.php that is recognized by TESL Canada for a Standard 2 certificate if you also have a Canadian four-year degree or Canada-evaluated four-year degree.

Found an interesting article prepared for the US Dept of Education in 2009 after a 12 year study.

http://www2.ed.gov/rschstat/eval/tech/evidence-based-practices/finalreport.pdf

Icalweb.com had this link to show online training is a viable way to learn. As a former Flight instructor I wouldnt want to even know if there was a pilot somewhere who learned everything online, ! Anyone can learn the concepts, the aerodynamics etc., but there is a point of application that is crucial in knowing how to fly and not just knowing about flying. The difference between flying Flight Simulator on your computer and actually hand flying down to minimums in LIFR(low instrument conditions) weather is huge! Worth a look.

I believe thats the difference everyone is speaking to in this thread.

But what you're talking about is essentially the difference between having a supervised teaching practicum with real students and not having a supervised teaching practicum.

Exactly. I believe that there is a difference between knowing "how" and simply knowing "about" teaching or flying etc.

I'm a strong proponent of practical, hands on knowledge. My inquiry earlier was to determine whether taking an online course right now would inrease my chances for more interviews, and open more doors now. Either way, I will take a "live" course with practicum.
