It's not quite that simple. There are people viewing these threads who have had offers to teach in RAK and Google has led them here to find out about the place before they come. I know - about a year ago, I was one of them.

I was terrified by what I'd read about the place, but took the chance that the posters were either wrong, or bitter and jaded. It turned out that much of what people said about RAK on this board gave an completely inaccurate picture of the city.

Those who knock RAK have perhaps lost perspective about the place and only see the negatives: yes, Nahkeel is appallingly dusty and dingy, but what awesome food..! The trucks going down the main drag are a blight on the city, but so long as they're not driving right by your house all the time, they're no more than a minor annoyance.

The shopping is adequate (Carrefour's prices are generally cheaper than North America, and now there's a Spinney's for what's not available at Carrefour); the food is excellent and cheap if you like Indian and Lebanese, and the expat communit(ies) are full of very friendly and smart people. Dubai's only an hour away down a shiny new highway if you want it.

RAK isn't perfect, but it's better for my family than where we came from. I'm glad the naysayers didn't scare me off.
