Everything worked out for me, thanks to some heavy hitters who were called in by the management of the school I work for.
Apparently they applied pressure in just the right places, things were resolved and our paperwork was processed.
Nonetheless, folks on planes as we speak; coming to Taiwan with the expectation that they won't have to leave for a visa run 'cos they've got a 60 day visa are going to be a mite miffed when they find out the loophole has closed. |

Honest-agent, when you say "things are back to normal again...for now" do you mean they are converting visas without having to leave the country? I'll be arriving in Taipei on April 15th and I was wondering what I may be facing in the coming month. |

Hey
On Jan 1 this year they started to enforce it as this.....that unless you were from a 'English speaking' country whos nationals can enter taiwan on a landing visa...you would no longer be able to do things the way we had been.
In short....Aussies, NZ, Eng, Can and the US could still do it all others had to get the work permit issued before coming here.
I was there again today for 2 hours and talked with the director and he showed me another directive saying things are back to normal again..for now

I don't get this. I'm Canadian, can enter Taiwan on a 30 day landing visa but they were still demanding that I have a work permit to change into a residency visa.
So how long was this in effect for, just the day that my application was on someone's desk?
If it's back to 'normal' now will it be implemented again in the future? |

As far as I know you were never "really" allowed to get a residency permit on a landing visa. The fact that they bend the rules in some places to accomadate us doesn't make it the law.
I have never really had a problem until I got married. So much paperwork. Uhhh |

Hey
Yes, if you are from Canada or America or England or Aus or NZ you will be able to continue coming here on 60 day visator visas and converting to a residency permit once the employer gets permission from the Council of Labor affairs
So I have been told by the Office in Taichung
They seem to have only tried it for a day...realized it was gonna be a mess and let it go back to the old way
I expect in the future it will be implemented
No heavy hitters or important people palyed a role for the Yamahuh poster..they simply reverted back the next day...everyone got a scare
I also would expect that the Countries listed above respective trade offices here put in a quick call to the Taiwanese officials asking for some explantion on this change...most likely urging a more gradual implementation as it would cause a bit of extra work for them having a bunch of Irate people calling thier offices and complaining...just an informed guess
Again, it could all change once more in a week...thats the way several Taiwan agencies work....organized confusion by times or consistently inconsistent

| Just my luck, the day they decide to implement a procedural change for one day is the same day that my paperwork is on the approvals desk waiting for the rubber stamp. |

There have been many changes over the years, originally you had to fly out of the country to and get a Taiwan representative office to issue the new visa.
They made it easier, but often the rules are interpreted differently, sometimes you get the nice person some times not. Sometimes they are fishing for your employer to pay a little to oil the wheels.
Crackdowns happen also for various things , like kindergarten hunt the foreign teacher working illegally at another school, or the police visits to check up on where you live.
Looks like perhaps you had a bad day, or a small crackdown on paperwork was in progress. |
