I don't think it matters if you want to "Americanize" or not. Simply by teaching English, through our own ideas and thoughts passed on to students. Consciously or sub-consciously. It happens. The more English a person knows, the greater his or her chance is to being exposed to different ideas, ways of thinking, cultures etc.
Mexico is already Americanized as it is. Wal-Mart is the largest employer here with over 140,000 employees. American restaurants and stores are everywhere. Is that a bad thing? No, I don't think so. Before NAFTA Mexicans didn't have much choice in the way of consumer goods and credit was hard to come by. Now the standard of living is going up. Why? Because Mexico chose to stay isolated with state run industries? No, by opening up to free trade and American and other foreign investment. Right now, Mexico needs to open PEMEX to outside investment or there won't be a PEMEX in about ten years.
BTW moonlight, how many hours a week do you work and what are the conditions like? Is it a chain school, independent language school or a colegio (primaria, secundaria, prepa)? |

Couldn't agree with you more on that one, not just open up but fully privatize. but try telling that to the average Mexican who will just repeat the mantra (something like), "�Pero PEMEX es nuestro patrimonio!" |

The problem here seems to be amongst other things, the idea that the politicians and others have, which is this: I don't really care about the greater good of the country and society, I only care about advancing my career and power. Example: look at what AMLO did after the 2006 election. He didn't have respect for the IFE or anything else, least of all the rights of people in Mexico City that couldn't get to work because of his blockade of Reforma. The PRD still doesn't recognize Pres. Calderon and just keeps on going with more of its insane antics. Meanwhile, Calderon who is desperate to appear as the do something, do anything president after six years of Fox's "sorry its not my fault" governance. So what do we get? Bold reforms that are needed to insure PEMEX can continue to play a vital role in the Mexican economy? No, a watered down version that does too little, too late to really fix the core problems at PEMEX. Like Phil_K said, you can't even talk about reform or privation of PEMEX without people just closing off to reality and chanting some ridiculous slogan about how the oil belongs to all Mexicans. Don't worry, soon there won't be enough oil to even worry about. Viva Mexico!  |

Yes they are! They weren't in my class this semester, because they are all in their last semester here--but I had them way back in their first year. It's so exciting we are still are humming about it!  |

Melee...good for you! I am impressed by your former students.
No one can ever convince me that Walmart�s is a good thing for anyone or anyplace on our planet other than for the owners counting their money.
i�m working in a private, independent language school. I was asked approximately how many hours I wanted before they added me to the schedule I could have more hours if I want, but right now I�m doing 23 hrs a week. and I am very well treated. |
