Hey Atom! You don't realise how good the Post is until you have to live somewhere without any kind of English language press. After my exile in the Peoples' Republic (not long now!) I'll never criticise the Jak Post or Tempo again.
And before someone points out that there is such a thing as the China Daily, let me tell you that is not a newspaper in the real sense of the word.
The Jak post rocks. |

The whole Indonesian Government is a joke. |
Has always been so. At least since 1976 it has. We can laugh at it with ease if we are not there (in Indonesia) but when you're in the 'joke', it probably aint so funny; as you point out.

+1
Recent examples:
1. The sanctification of 'Pak' Harto.
2. The voluntary blocking of YouTube, MySpace etc by ISPs (at the request of the goverment) so that no one could possibly watch Fitna.
3. The padlocking of massuesues' trousers to prevent prostitution.
4. The life sentence for a protester who waved an RMS flag. Though to be fair, he may only get 10 years... |

That is not a complete sentence. It does not have a subject and/or verb. Really, this is appalling. call yourself a teacher etc etc etc |

You might want to take a closer look at what you posted. |

...man they're just so many...as somebody else said, what's not strange in Indonesia.
I saw a woman freak out at 4:30 AM once...Came out of my friends flat (which is in the slums of Grogol)...& there were people gathering around a screaming woman...Who, I was told, was sitting alone in her room with the door open a touch...& that's a fertile situation for a ghost to enter a person through their back.
Apparently her own family couldn't understand what she was saying to them....Even my friends believed this about her.
My girlfriend came back from Bali with some videos of 'magic' taken with her cellphone. One actually made me leave a restaurant when I saw it...about to be sick...Because what I actually saw was a man stick a knife right through his own neck (in between the 'jugular' & the spine)
She went up to him and jiggled the long knife...& you could see it caused him pain. I still don't believe it, though...Or I do, but believe that this man was just mad enough to do this to himself (for some cash)...
In the last seven months I've seen a hell of a lot & just stopped writing it all down... |

Best thing that sticks with me? Seeing a guy wearing a paint bucket as a helmet with the handle placed under his nose as a chin strap.
Some dude trying to sell me sandals for 400 000 on Jl Malioboro in Jogja.
Some guy wearing makeshift thongs made out of banana leaves.
The ridiculously variable strength of beer which I attribute to it being diluted various numbers of times.
the list goes on. I've come to the conclusion that Indonesia is sort of the nation-state equivalent of the internet. Wacky, insane, with various wacko nutjobs and ridiculous things. Overall, however, the average 'user' is exactly that - average. |

The comment regarding using a bucket as a safety helmet reminded me of the idiotic attitudes towards helmets and their use for personal safety.
I saw a number of collisions between motor cyclists where the first thing to hit the road were the helmets, as either the driver had not strapped it on or he let go as he was holding it on.
I once asked a fairly bright senior student, who had just started his large and powerful motorbike, why he had left his helmet hanging on the hook and was obviously not going to wear it.
"It's after 9pm pak" he said.
So I asked him what the connection was.
"The police have all gone home pak" was his reply.
"But the hospital emergency room is open all night" I told him.
He looked at me in surprise. He could not see the connection at all. |

I saw an old guy die on impact with the road in what should have been a minor accident. He wobbled over a hole in the road, speed no more than 40kph, and came off his Vespa. As GE wrote, the first thing to hit the road was the tupperware 'helmet' - followed closely by the back of his head.
This all happened as I was driving past in the opposite direction. I turned around and went back to help but the guy was quite dead by then. A local doctor appeared within minutes but there wasn't anything he could do except confirm the death. |

Hehe I always remember the motorbike taxi drivers in Bangkok who would wear construction hard hats instead of proper motorbike helmets. Yep that'll help you if you crash... |
