When i learned to teach, it was DON"T CROSS THE SECRETARY OR CUSTODIAN - now we add CLERICAL ASSITANT to the list of those who have the real power in schools.....

you can't TOTALLY seperate culture from language (and you wouldn't want to either). those who don't want to offend can try to sanitize slightly, but the arabs just have to deal with it..... or become less communicatively competent - don't argue with me - just read my thesis on the subject.

OK - a new question: What topics/areas can be covered with students that they are most interested in, excited about, enjoy?
Thanks especially to VS for your comments in this and other threads. I am looking fwd to my new job in Oman in the Fall.

Then, a CLERICAL ASSISTANT - nothing at all to do with the class, reported that the teacher was "insulting Islam".
It was the secretary not a clerical assistant.

You are right though Neal. It was her way of getting back at the teacher for an entirely unrelated matter weeks after the Teddy Bear had been honorably retired.

It seems it would be wise not to have a teddy bear with a common name beginning with the letter "M."

I ended up once, in a place surrounded by teenage kids. A very intelligent, witty 14 year old came up to me --- very sincerely --- used his fingers to create a cross --- and said "show me how Christians pray."

I guess the best answer would be a question "what would you like me to pray for?" (that's not really how Muslims pray - so it's hard to answer that question -- and the discussion is thereby averted).

I answer some questions about religion. I'll avoid deep Christian doctorine. Even theologians have debated those things for generations. Cultural discussions are occasionally okay for me, although I'll admit - I'm actually not a real fan of western culture. I do not discuss politics, at all.
