Dear sheikh,
Or maybe, way back then, there were fewer hazards to be perceived.
I got my first license in 1959 in Boston MA. Back then, you needed a different license for a stick shift than an automatic one (which still makes sense to me; have you ever seen a person who's driven a car with an automatic transmission all his/her life ever try to drive a car with a shift stick?)
And the main hazards we had to perceive were all those darn horses and carriages. (Just kidding - even I'm not that ancient.)

Talking about static violations but in my last year in Riyadh I bought a humongous Mitsubishi Pajero and suddenly found everybody kept on backing into it. Happened five times in eight months. the SUV was fine, but the cars,, including the Caprice and a couple of Mercs, didn't come off so lightly.

Strange; you'd have thought they'd have seen me.

Key to safe driving: Not surprising other drivers. Always try to communicate your intentions (signals, direction of wheels, direction of car, etc.). This should be highlighted as much as defenstive driving (or be part of it!).

This is what I've practicsed and not accidents in the last 4 years here. Let's see if I keep the good times rollin' in KSA.

The problem with the majority of Saudi drivers is that they do not have intentions to communicate. They have what I call sudden surprises!
So, do not be surprised to see a Saudi Driver reversing with his car in the highway and in the middle of the night and without lights!!
And believe me I have seen this several times! So, when driving in Saudi you have to switch-on all your brain fuses, be 150% alert all the time, and expect the un-expected, and pray GOD that you will return safe and undamaged from your driving in the magic kingdom. Laughing

Certainly agree with not surprising other drivers. But ''direction of wheels, direction of car'' ?????
Surely the car and the wheels go in the same direction, even if that is into the car in front of you. Confused
