Doubtless I'll be shot to pieces for this, but who cares, it's Friday afternoon and it's pissing down in HK. Anyway, my conference-going chum (a HKU lecturer - OK, not TESOL, which might make a difference) doesn't bother going to conferences much any more - but he used to be keen.

He has some interesting tales, and claims that conferences are especially popular with what he describes as "predatory" female academics. I queried this. He said "think about it - most of the academics at these conferences are in their 30s and 40s. Most of them are either married or have long-term partners, but their partners do not accompany them to conferences." Think about it.
