The Ministry of Higher Education, for the Colleges of Education in Oman, don't take the passports of Westerners - and I know of at least one Westerner who ran off with money here in Oman, (and another from the UAE).
BUT, the Ministry takes the passports of Tunisians. They've been hiring a lot of Tunisians, it seems, to replace the Egyptians. So the non-Western teachers are treated differently - well, nearly all of them got a 4-year contract with a BIG furniture allowance that us Westerners didn't get. We have to wait every year to find out if we've been rehired or fired.
Sorry to hear Mazoon College is keeping passports. Penny-pinching and punishing 'the others' for one person's thief are common Omani - and many other nationalities' ' - behavior.
Does anyone knows what the USA does when a foreigner runs off on a contract? Or a foreign student leaves the country without paying bills? Do students have to show their electricity and phone bills as paid? Just curious. |
