| I'm constantly thinking of new ways to keep the class interesting so the students' motivation is high but it's exhausting being so creative all the time (but fun, I guess). |
It is, and it can be very rewarding if things 'line up', like hitting a good golf shot off the tee.
Today's class was quite successful, I tried some of the tips from the replies. In particular jigsaw reading worked well for an elementary level text. This lead into some role-plays on complaining, and then a nice follow-up where students had to match customer service problems with proper solutions. The whole class kicked off with a pronunciation warmer on word stress, and purposely involved the students acting silly. Partner A would see a word-stress pattern on a piece of paper like, 'da DA da', or 'DA da da', or 'da DA'. He would mimic the pattern and partner B would match that to a review word from last class.
A seperate topic was shopping and bargaining which is always a hit for Shanghainese students. A colleague lent me a shopping and money game which I used, and had the students actively up and about. All in all, the lesson was much more motivating than the last one.
