So-called babysitters are also teachers - they just have to balance the aspects of care-work and teaching their children to follow instruction.
So-called teachers also have to be care workers - when they teach small kids they have to care about the safety of the child in much the same way as the baby-sitter - which for 5 year old means paying a lot of attention to this aspect of your work. Since the the teacher has a class of kids a lot of teaching involves caring about the development of good social interaction that will aid the learning process.
I think the best way of describing FT work with 5 year olds - would be to think in terms of pre-school. Most normal 5 year old aren't ready to sit hour after hour at a desk - they need gradual steps to take them in this direction. Single Chinese kids are also not used to social interaction/competition - help is also needed here.
Making paper planes seems the perfect type of creative lesson - that can foster some of the qualities needed in the classroom and is so interesting that it becomes more fun than making trouble. To make their plane the kids must listen to the teacher, wait in turn for help and tidy up after themselves. You can also make this an English lesson by throwing in English words - I want (paper), throw, pick it up, good, bad....etc etc.
Why do you think this lesson has nothing to do with teaching English - teaching English is not about memorising sentences or kiddies songs - that method fails nearly every time |

This will be my last message. This thread has become way too serious...

Know what? My Job actually IS to teach these little emperors and empresses to memorise bullshit rhymes and songs. THAT, my friend, is what I'm being paid for.

Well using that rather tired method you must have heard of the monkey song.
"Hickory dickory dock the mouse ran up the clock" - not a great deal of interesting English in there for any 5 year old.
If you want your employers to get full value out of your services I suggest you stick to more creative type lessons - paper airplanes, painting pictures, games, interactive stories - stuff that gets a 5 year olds attention - stuff in which you can include simple English language in the form of commands and questions - relevant English that the child wants to understand because it wants to take part in the activity.
Remember the difference between teacher and FT employed merely as a white face - is the ability to be able to devise a lesson to meet a specific situation - together with the confidence and authority to follow up on an assessment. Hickory dickory dock just doesn't seem to be a lesson that your 5 year olds need at the moment

Looking at your scary demon picture with the crying baby in your hands really shows your authority of caring for small kids - LOL |

| The sad truth is that most western hired teachers who come to China don't do it for teaching. It's more of a holiday and possibly even a money making experience. Teaching can be very frustrating in the beginning of anyones' career. It takes effort, experimentation, and a lot of reflection. In the case of China, most westerners give up trying to be good at it within a few months, and then go home within a year or less, having contributed nothing, and leaving Chinese with a long-lasting negative view about foreigners. |

Spend less time looking at the picture - and more time reading the words.
Creative lessons are a great way to get small kids to follow your teaching. And if your employers insist on hickory dickory dock - here's a hickory dickory dock resource page - coloring and craft work related to the rhythm.
http://www.dltk-teach.com/rhymes/hickory/index.htm
Carrying out some hickory dickory related projects (and they don't have to be a complicated as the ones shown on the link), while throwing in some simple English may make that boring rhyme into a far more interesting experience - where those 5 year olds may actually get to enjoy your lesson!!!!!
Doing whats best for small children, trying to create lessons they can can enjoy, is the way a teacher can show their care. However just following your employer's instruction - and mindlessly drilling the words of an abstract nursery rhyme into the heads of bored 5 year olds, so as the kindy can display some form of English "product" - seems to be a little removed from my understanding of childcare |
