Ok, I'll sweat the one hour thing later.
The original post contained a list of my qualifications, and I asked for a ballpark number or range regarding salary. If there is no way to even ballpark that, would someone just say so and let the one hour thing go?
Sweeney, I appreciate your comments really, thank you. |

You shouldnt make any less than 15,000 in my opinion, and really you should be looking to start at something closer to 20,000.
Of course, it depends on the school, and the area. I would strongly advise looking to unis for jobs. |

You shouldn't, but you will probably have to. I'd go for an absolute minimum of $12000 p.m. |

thanks Phil and dixie. I guess I got a little short but Wildchild's post set me off.
That information is just what I wanted. I honestly appreciate it.
Thanks, Gary |

Why would he have to?
Perhaps outside of the city, and outside of a uni/private school setting, but if he goes uni, then he shouldnt. I wouldnt settle for 12,000 and I dont have a masters, or his years of experience. |

But Cuernavaca would be about 3 hours from the airport on an average day, probably better to allow 4 hours in case of traffic contingencies. That's not counting the 3 hours ahead of flight time that you are supposed to check in. So, a day's trip from leaving home to taking off. I don't want to discourage you, just to point out that things can be different on the ground than how they look on the map.

Actually, the average time the direct bus takes is one hour forty minutes from just north of the centre of Cuernavaca to the airport. I've done it numerous times and the only time it took longer was when my mom's bus got stuck in traffic for 50 minutes and even then it only took just over 2.5 hours. |

SLP is interesting since Long Way Home says they are gagging for teachers. Great expression, by the way. |
Thanks, and it's still gagging. In a language school in SLP you won't make more than $7000. High Schools pay a bit more but unis is where you'll need to be to make the $15,000 minimum. Try the Tec de Monterrey and also the UVM network of unis as they do pay according to your qualifications. You may have to take a few hours to start off with in some unis then just hang around until someone makes you full-time. |

But would he get into a uni without formal English teaching qualifications? |

You mean a degree in education? Yes. |

This thread is 4 years old so I'm not sure if it's against the rules to bump it. But since it's relevant to my question, perhaps it's better than starting a new thread?
I've been offered a job at a colegio in Orizaba. The pay is 8000 pesos and a "room" in a house is provided. I am told all utilities are included, including wireless internet. Not sure about TV or laundry though. From reading, it seems these free "rooms" are common in Mexico.
I'll be teaching 5th grade with 14 classes a week (45 minutes each) plus lesson planning, lunch hour (eating with the children) and outside activities. When I asked what my total weekly hours would be, the person really didn't have an answer. What I gathered was not more 25 or so. That comes out to about 80 pesos/hour.
Does this sound reasonable? I have a Masters (non ESL) and 2 years teaching English in Georgia. |

That's not a very good pay.
But costs are low for a single person who has housing provided. What subject is your MA in? |

I have an MPA - Public Administration. Certainly not related. What should I be aiming for salary-wise? I've heard of people with similar experience making 12-15K but they pay for their own housing. |

12 to 15k sounds right. Renting a room in a shared house in Orizaba shouldn't set you back more than a 1500 a month. So, 8,000 still falls short.
I know of a university in the state of Oaxaca that teaches public administration. Not saying you could get a job teaching that--they teach in Spanish--but they hire native speaking English teachers and knowing the subjects the students are studying is a plus. |

Here's an update. I declined the offer for the job in Orizaba. There were a few things that bothered me, namely they wanted me to teach 5th grade (which, as a new ESL teacher, I wasn't comfortable with) and the pay seemed too low. I'm going through GlobalERS and Monica was going to try and negotiate with them but they ended up hiring someone already.
GlobalERS then put me in touch with 2 other schools. One in Monterrey and the other in Mexico City. I told her I was not interested in Monterrey for safety concerns (based on what I have read here).
The interesting thing is that both schools are Catholic BOYS schools and the pay range is 18K-20K with paid vacations, grocery allowance, paid visa, etc, etc. No housing or paid flight at end of contract. The pay is great but I wonder if this is because these are boys schools? From my limited ESL experience, I found boys to be the worst learners. They are usually lazy, obnoxious, and disruptive in class, whereas the girls are (usually) more attentive. The thought of teaching all boys does not appeal much to me for these reasons. However, maybe because this is an all-boys school, they will behave better given there are no distractions (girls)?
Can someone who has taught at a Catholic boys school give me some feedback on what I could expect should I accept a position? Is 18K good in Mexico City?
