you have been let off the hook at a minor cost to you. NOt that I want to say it should have been dearer! Just as a matter of fact - they could have dported you at your expense.
This shows how far we have come in China, on the road towards more freedom. There will be a day when cohabiting will officially be tolerated. And it should. The current mess is unfair to those who get caught because they have no guanxi. Foreign nationals happen to have less of this.
I observed in Shenzhen that police in one district were completely disinterested in what was going on in private homes. I lived with a girl, and the police called her my 'laopo', which she certainly was not! They came to see my passport and my girlfriend's ID card - then we never heard from them again!
But in another area of the same city, the police were following me on many an occasion, when I went to see a girl in her private lodgings! Once they came within 5 minutes of my entering a hotel guest room - where I had gone to bring some luggage of a girl with whom I had no intention of engaging in any untoward activity!
ANd in another part of town, a girl told me to come to her place well after herself, so as not to be seen together with her!

That was before 1998, and I surmise a lot has changed there in recent years.

In your own case, I suppose having been intimate with a policeman was a wee bit more sensitive. He must uphold the Party's tenets, and some of them are known to be xenophobic. There is a lot of paranoia. He has to live up to higher standards than the groceryman next door to the school has to.

I completely sympathise with your plight although I must say you are lucky to have some other foreigners in the town.

I do agree with Roger's point about morality in China being applied for Chinese and local people.

I have an acquaintance ( Foreigner from India ) who operates a clothing company. I visited the factory and was introduced to his staff. Having discussions with the staff, what surprised me, was that couples cohabitate after their engagement and get married when the girl becomes pregnant. And yet when I am introduced to a girl, I am asked 'What are your intentions, Are you interested in this girl becoming your wife'. This occurs in Jiangsu province !
