The reason I chose to be argumentative is this:

It would certainly be incorrect to say it, but it is a matter of choice whether you write Al-Riyadh or Ar-Riyadh. Like you I prefer the latter, but many prefer the former systemically, and that does not mean they are ignorant.

No, it's not. If you look at a list of international airports you'll find both Riyadh and Dammam airports listed without the article. As the information for all lists comes from the Saudi Aviation authorities it is clear they are not following your prescription. |
