When and where to meet? On Monday evening. That's the time for El Grito, right?

Are there fireworks on other nights, or just Monday? I don't want to miss anything.

Charlie

Everything happens on Monday evening, around 11 PM, though festivities are going on all day and the next.

I'm thinking of gong to a delegacion instead of the Zocalo...a little less crazy. Miguel Hidalgo or Cuauhtemoc delegaciones each have their own grito, fireworks, and fun.

Hey, Guy, do you know how to find out where the local D.F. celebrations take place?

You can just google the addresses of the delegacion HQ you want, or know that anything within 10 blocks of the Zocalo Plaza de la Constitucion is a party.

Delegacion Miguel Hidalgo is at:
http://www.miguelhidalgo.gob.mx/
Av Parque Lira 94...close to metro Constituyentes. The delegacion here is inside a lush park.

Delegacion Cuauhtemoc is at:
http://www.cuauhtemoc.df.gob.mx/
Corner of Aldama and Mina streets, Colonia Buenavista.
I've never seen the grounds for this place.

I spent one independence day at delegacion Venustiano Carranza and had a good time..more of a family spot. The grounds are a large paved square. Rode a mechanical bull and smashed confetti eggs on everyone in sight.

Francisco del Paso y Troncoso No.219,
Col. Jardn Balbuena

Benito Juarez might be a good one too...

And Coyoacan will probably have a good show, though I think the plaza is still under construction.

Each of the links above give info on the festivities planned.

I heard AMLO won't be in the Zocalo tonight. He's going to Oaxaca. One of his lackeys will be there instead. No AMLO, that's something to be happy about Laughing

Have to agree with you there...

The night of the 15th presented some pretty depressing weather here in DF. Drizzle, all evening. I went to the delegacion for Miguel Hidalgo for the first time. It was set on smaller grounds, and they didn't take advantage at all of the huge green space available to them (I've brought the dogs and bikes to this area before and really enjoyed it), preferring to run everything on the smaller paved part of the plaza.

Had to leave before the grito as the rain was a real downer...a bar near the Angel of Independence proved to be a drier spot.

Unfortunately for our friends in Morelia, Michoacan, last evening turned out very badly. While the Governor was giving his address, all hell broke loose. The war on drugs is one thing, but terrorism is quite another. A very sad evening for Mexico.

I spent the night in the E.R and waiting room while my wife got her appendix removed. it's definitely better than a grenade, but certainly not what we had planned.

Sorry to hear that. Hope it wasn't an IMSS E.R. and waiting room.

I was sick too, respiratory infections seem to be the order of the day at the moment.

Absolutely not. I'd rather pay out of pocket for private medical care in this country. The doctors are often better at IMSS, but the facilities themselves are for me.... disgusting.

Anyone else have any non-traditional gritos?

Not me Smile

I had the most traditional Grito possible. I went with my wife to the Zocalo and we were there from 5pm to midnight. The rain was steady, but we were prepared with umbrellas and jackets. It also helped to keep the crowds down until just before 11pm.

I saw and heard AMLO give his grito Mad It was a pathetic joke. Most of the people kept their backs turned toward him and many booed and jeered his remarks.

The real Grito from Calderon Very Happy was short, only 33 words. But the response was enthusiastic. The fireworks were great and everybody seemed to be in a great and festive mood.

Security to enter the Zocalo was pretty good. The avenues were all closed and you had to pass through metal detectors, and submit to being patted down Shocked as well as bag inspections. All that was fine with me. I expect that we will see a lot more of that in next year's celebrations across the country.

In the morning we watched the military parade from a balcony over Cinco de Mayo. It was an excellent parade and show of force by the Mexican Army, Navy and Air Force. There were fly-overs by various aircraft including the F-5 interceptors and various helicopters. The march had an excellent representation of Mexico's military including armored vehicles, military bands, and detachments of various Mexican military units including the Special Forces and Presidential Guard. I also heard that Mexico's first female military pilot marched with the Air College.

Viva Mexico! Exclamation !

I live on the top floor of a condo in a an area with few tall buildings, and although distant, am in direct line south to north with Zcalo. Therefore I just have to go up to the roof to see a great display of the aircraft passing directly over my head - and none of the crowds!

I would have liked to have seen a little more of the airpower of Mexico in flight.

BTW Mexico has 10 F-5 fighters. Anybody got any idea on when and with what Mexico plans to replace them with?

I heard one time that Mexico wanted F-16's but the US gov wouldn't approve the sell.

They are supposed to also be considering SU-27's from Russia.

Sorry, I wasn't asking to come over and hang out.

This is my Friday humorless response Laughing
