Dear NCTBA,

Hey, I believe you. Sometimes events that might sound like urban legends actually happen. And the events you described certainly would not seem at all unusual in the Kingdom.

Regards,
John

So, I hope you did not fax your Miss Vietnamese with flirt messages 24/24! Laughing (Yes, I know you are the real GN2, not anybody else!).

Since I have a fax machine sitting on my desk, it's a lot easier just to stick the paper in the machine and send it rather than the convoluted procedure you have just outlined.
If I had a fax machine sitting at my desk, and what needing faxing was on paper, it would be. However ghost does not have a fax machine sitting on his desk, does not have a desk, and does not have a telephone line that allows him to call outside the campus, unless he's been quick and gone of to Building 21 to get it set up.

I had a fax machine in Kuwait in 1995-1996, and it was considered the latest technology, and loads of us used it to send our job applications off. I sold it in December 1997 so I could have something to eat over Christmas, and have never missed it since. It's easy enough to send a fax from a computer but for that you need an international telephone line, and plenty of people either haven't set it up, or as in my case, don't set it up because they are worried about unauthorized people using it. And sending international faxes by fax-to-phone is in fact a lot cheaper.

As soon as you teach me how to prove the existance of something that doesn't exist...i.e. WMD in Iraq circa 2003.

Ghost... get the rabies shots. And if you plan to keep feeding the ferals (which many of us do) get the rabies vaccine that the vets now take. Actually getting the 3 shots for treatment may do it.

This is not a disease to take any chances with.

The 26 year old Saudi doctor at the Public Hospital in Khobar strongly advised me against taking the rabies shots. The clinic doctor, I think is Egyptian, told me to take the rabies shots.

In the end, I went with the advice of the Saudi doctor, who although young, told me that he had consulted with another doctor, and even produced a medical manual he uses showing the usual treatment. In this area of the world, rabies from cats is not endemic, so he advised against the shots, which he said could produce inconvenient side effects.

Now, I make sure to go to the clinic at the University everyday by 3pm, so that I can be attended by the Filipina nurses on duty, with whom communication is easier than with the Saudi and other country national staff.

Trying to buy a mobile phone (cell phone) in Khobar last night was an interesting experience. Near King Khalid street, the mobile/cell phone stores are so numerous, and the choices so vast, that in the end, as often when there are too many choices - I ended up buying no mobile/cell phone.

Perhaps, I will be able to continue my streak of not possessing a cell phone, which amazed everyone in Taiwan and Korea. In their minds, it would be impossible to function without that tool.

Oh, and to continue the "rage", I remember when HR in Taif, advised us to carry paperwork proving that we'd received our Malaria shots as the folk at the Al Hada check-point had been instructed to give them to anybody who could not prove that they had them as it was Hajj season.

Anyone up for a Saudi cop to be jabbin' ya with a spike in the arm???

Really, the vets on this board could go on for hours. And, BTW, it was the GR guy who pulled the two stunts that I mentioned in my first post on this thread. I always had great HRs until I had to endure a Saudi HR at my last gig. As I used to tell my co-workers, "It's time to put 'Humanity' back into HR".

Well, in a case of wild cats or dogs bites, I will not trust the Saudi or the Egyptian doctor! I will trust this:

The Rabies Zones:

High Incidence: Africa, Middle East, Central and Southeast Asia, China, Korea, Central America and South America (except Argentina and Chile).

Vaccine: A three-part series of pre-exposure rabies vaccination can be given over a three-week period to travelers planning visits to areas where the risk of bites is high. The benefit for people vaccinated in advance of a rabies exposure is that they will not need to get immunoglobulin, which can be hard to obtain in the developing countries where risk of rabies is highest. Even those who receive the pre-exposure vaccine still will need additional post-exposure vaccination in cases of suspected rabies exposure.

If the rabies is not treated promptly with the correct medicine and post-exposure vaccine, it will attack the nervous system. At this stage, it is invariably fatal.

Considering that the doctor had never met or seen the cat... with a disease that is invariably fatal... and a lingering horrible way to die, I'd prefer to err on the side of caution.

Again... if you plan to continue putting yourself into a position of interaction with the feral cats and dogs of any of the Middle Eastern countries, get the vaccine.

In my experience young Saudi doctors are excellent. They haven't had time to forget what they've learned yet.

Medical treatment can be very good in KSA. It is now more than 4 years since I had open-heart surgery here. A quadruple by-pass !
