I think VS has nailed it on the head here (except for her last comment in parentheses--I doubt that).
In Ras al Khaimah a number housewife-students I knew were fascinated with Oprah. I, of course, am not.
By the way, only in Saudi Arabia and in Taliban territory (offhand I can't think of any others) would a female victim of gang rape be sentenced to flogging for having been in a car with an unauthorized man. That's not a gross stereotype. It's the truth. |

I think you misunderstand VS when she stated anti-Arab gross sterotype...because of the gross actions of some people then 'others' tend to think of all Arab males as such...thus the term sterotyping of a whole group of people based upon the actions of some!
Not all Arab men act in this way! |

I respectfully disagree.
From my conversations with Saudi women, I don't think the Rania Al Baz episode made Saudis reflect on the inadequacy of their society's response to domestic abuse - rather, it (perhaps predictably) caused them to become super-defensive and to minimise the importance of the issue. Plus, how exactly would being displayed as an exotic exhibit on Oprah give Saudi women an insight into more enlightened ways of dealing with domestic abuse? Not that KSA doesn't have much to learn from other countries in this regard, but I hardly think this is the way to do it.

Maybe so - none of the Saudi women I met deny the reality of Al Baz' suffering, but they all think of her as a shameless self-promoter. Also, while she was described in the foreign press as a "well-known TV personality", according to everyone I've spoken to on the issue, she was almsot unheard of before the domestic abuse incident. |

| cmp--yes, I know. I made a further reference to "gross stereotype" vs. the truth on another tangent unrelated to Oprah's show. In regard to the the Oprah show, I merely doubted (though I could be wrong, as I can't stand the show so I won't watch another minute of it) that gross anti-Arab stereotypes would emanate from it. |

Dear scot47,
I can speak only for myself, of course, but in my case it's because I'm a sexist, racist pig who can't stand the thought of a black woman's being so rich, powerful and successful.
But don't get me wrong. Some of my best friends are rednecks.
Regards,
John |

Dear scot47,
Then you certainly picked the right career path - there's no danger whatsoever of your becoming someone you don't like.

I agree, John. But Scotty has surrounded himself with poor, powerless and unsuccessful people. And what do you know? He hates us, too. |

Do elaborate! That's what my son would say, when he was 4 (no insinuation here) when trying to pronounce The "Simpsons"...

Uncle Bond. All Scots love money, especially the idea of having it. I'm a Scot and envy people like Uncle Bandar, your friend. Bandar probably spends more on suits and shirts in one year than I'll make in my life. B******! |

Perhaps scot47 feels the same way about the rich, powerful and successful as Nick in "The Great Gatsby" feels about the Buchanans:
"Throughout the novel Nick finds himself surrounded by lavish mansions, fancy cars, and an endless supply of material possessions. A drawback to the seemingly limitless excess Nick sees in the Buchanans, for instance, is a throwaway mentality extending past material goods. Nick explains, "They were careless people, Tom and Daisy -- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made"
And, if so, I tend to agree. Look at the mess on Wall St. That passage made me think a lot about the word "careless."

"All Scots love money," So says this poisonous little weasel living on the Costa De Las Idiotas in Spain. Why DOES he come to this board when he has no ongoing interst in the Middle East - except to attack the regulars here?
