Anyone know about Romania? Do you have to fulfil residency first? Or is it like Singapore, where all male singaporeans have to do military service?

Where did you hear that???

My appols if I'm wrong...

All I can say is that the Czech Republic requires that you are married for 5 years before you can apply for citizenship/passport and then you'll have to pass a language test.

You can get married and apply for perm res. but that does not mean you have the right to work in other EU countries.

You'll also have to do a lot of paperwork including obtaining a criminal record from your home country and the CR, have an official/legal place of residence in the CR and have at least 165,000 Czech Crowns in a bank account (approx 6500US).

The police here are also clamping down on "sham" marriages (I had been married for 2 years to a Czech and had a two year old son and they still came round the house asking questions).

Then again can you blame them, I mean it's nigh on impossible for me to find a legal way into the USA even as an expereinced teacher and with a naturalized American grandmother!!!!!!!!!!

Bide your time I'm sure that Dubya will be annexing Europe in his next drive for world domination (I mean democracy!)

It's all over the news that they will be joining in 2007 or 2008 at the latest. As far as for me getting citizenship, my mother is Romanian, because of that, so am I. I don't need to pass a language test since my mother is Romanian.

I've contacted the embassy and my citizenship papers are in the works.

Clearly you're better informed than I am about the situation and congrats on becoming a "European" citizen.

One just hopes that Romania comes on in leaps and bounds over the next 2 years as when I was last there conditions were far from up to EU standards particulary in the villages where I saw children going unshod, many homes without water supply or electricity, glue siffing orphans on the streets of Bucuresti................all part of Ceausescu's rich legacy.

I sincerely hope things improve particulary for the Romany community whom I spent some time working with

Couldn't agree with you more.

I have a similar question...

Both my parents are from Estonia (now part of the European Union) and I am Canadian. So, does anyone know the following....

a) Can I work in Estonia as a Canadian? (or are there now EU complications),

b) Can I apply for an Estonian passport and therefore be able to work in the rest of Europe?

Thx.,
Martin.

Have you tried to contact the Estonian Embassy in Canada?

Sorry, part 2. The new EU members do not yet have working privileges in most of the 'old' EU. Laws vary country to country, but it's unlikely that if you are able to secure citizenship (it's not just a passport!) from Estonia, you are going to be able to work in France or Italy or Spain legally, at least not in the near future.

That might apply for some countries, spiral, but not for all. I know for a fact that we have many Estonians working here in Finland, including teachers.

So if Tilkster can get Estonian citizenship, he/she is not necessarily confined to Estonia for work.

Poro, I know it's not a blanket issue. From the CZ, we have much more chance of working in Britain than in Italy, for example. But, you understand what I mean - generally speaking, citizenship from one of these new member countries doesn't automatically unlock all of Europe. The poster I was replying to seemed to be in hopes of using Estonia to get into Western countries, and I'd still say there's a very slim chance that it would work this way in the near future.

to tilkster- i believe the estonian deal with getting citizenship is the same as with latvia which meabs that if youor your parents didn't register you as a citizen of Estonia ( as a direct descendant of pre ww2 estonian republic) before a cut off date (I think 1993?) then you can not get estonian citizenship without giving up your canadian citizenship. One example i know of is a mate's mum who was actually born in latvia but becauyse she didn't reguster before the cutoff date the only way she can get latvian citizenship now is by giving up her aussie passport.

Are there any sort of work visas if your spouse is a member of the EU? Perhaps a spousal visa? My wife was born in England and if we moved to Europe could I work? There must be some kind of residency requirements first.
