I understand, and have done, for a couple of years. However, there should be no need to live life like that (unless one chooses to, of course) after some years of experience and even minimal quals.
If you choose to: Godspeed! |

Worrying thing is I was still fairly sober when I wrote that post. I shall try to learn to control my Motorhead Motormouth. Students may not especially appreciate such rants anyway. Gotta get back to teaching before I go completely nuts in USA....

So basically, this is how your cover letter goes and you wonder why you are occasionally out of work:

[Dear sir or madam,
Hi.] I carry $3,000-6,000 in my jockstrap, my passport with return ticket in back pocket, and knives in both jacket pockets. Trained in martial arts. Stabbed men before. Anyone tries to rob me, I cut out their eyes. Live in hostels for months at a time, sleep with that wad in my shorts and a knife under my pillow, in 6-bunk rooms with 5 other drifters and no lockers.
Aint looking for trouble. Don't pub-crawl or party or walk around much after sunset. Carrying your life savings in your pants is a great way to stay sober. No family to wire funds, no "friends" I trust in USA. Bank said if I lose my debit card they will not mail replacement. My bankrupt bank just got gobbled by a global investment firm that may cancel our debit cards. Don't trust my old or new bank, especially these days. If that means dying in a pool of my own blood in some favela alley, rotting in some dungeon, or dying slow in some charity hospital without insurance, so be it. Aint had insurance in over a decade. Cest la gare. Pays da ticket, takes da ride. [I would be interested in any oportunities you have teaching English to anyone from kindergarden kids through to retirees. Please nail your job offer to the phone pole next to your building and I'll take it down when I pass through, because I have neither phone nor internet.
Sincerely,
James Hetfield.]

95% of the TEFLers I have met are nice middle kids who will have no idea about what you're talking about. They lived with their parents before teaching and will inherit that home when the parents die. In that point I sympathise with you as I never had/will have that benefit.
But you sound as if you're on a wind up. If you really are in that position then why wouldn't you do a few years in Korea to at least have 50kUS in the bank? |

What denomination are those bills? Not too many under $20s I hope, or that may be the reason you are gettting so much unwanted attention. |

...good point: if the highest value US banknote is the 100 dollar bill, then that makes between 30 and 60 banknotes so apart from the question of bulk, to my mind papercuts would be my main worry... |

| Whatever makes you think Obama is going to make any significant difference to the low wages paid to those in service industries in the US? |

Ive basically been on myown since my mom died when I was nineteen. Im basically disowned from my family (long story I wont bore you with).
I have found there is always a way to do what you need to do. What you want to do is another story. 98% of the time when people complain that they are broke and dont know what to do and life isnt fair ... they were not being responsible in the first place. (Can you guess that I am a Republican?)
Being responsible and thinking ahead avoid just about all problems. |

Never figured you for a repubican Thelma, but we agree on some things.
Two comments- I always figured that the "trust fund" TEFLer was some kind of an urban legend- I've never met one.
And, if you've got 5 grand in your jock, it could cut circulation where you might need it most. Get a bank account with an international card, for heaven's sake. (the card is going to be a LOT more comfortable in your jock than the wad.)
I've been a TEFL pro for nearly a decade. An "international light-traveling tough guy" for a few years before that. Apparently something we've got in common, James. (Let me tell you bout the time I walked from Pamplona to Barcelona, to save the bus fare.) But the two don't have to go together. I like traveling light, backpacking, hitchhiking, and getting around the world on the cheap. (Or at least I used to- not nearly as much time for adventures nowadays, though I manage to get a few in.)
CLose to the edge- not broke, but turned up in Seoul, where I know nobody, last weekend with no plans, no accomodation, no city map. Train delayed, got in at 11:00. Stayed in a hotel that would have included a woman for a small extra fee... comfortable, though.
Best,
Justin |

Responsible and Republican???? I presume you are joking. These two words don't belong in the same sentence. |

Dear Marcoregano,
"Responsible and Republican???? I presume you are joking. These two words don't belong in the same sentence."
Why, of course they do.
Republicans are never willing to admit they're responsible for any mistake (after all, Dubya never admitted to any, and if he didn't, what other Republican would?)

John |

TD, why are you implying that only Republicans believe in accepting responsibility for the situations they find themselves in? Following that premise, I guess that all the fat-cat denizens of Wall Street who've accepted bailouts from Washington lately are Democrats! |

Dear Justin,
"I always figured that the "trust fund" TEFLer was some kind of an urban legend- I've never met one."
I actually did, thought only one, in, of all places, Saudi Arabia. The guy was filthy rich and was in the field only as a (believe it or not) hobby. I never saw his home or cars, but a mutual friend visited him on one holiday and came back stunned. This guy was "Richie Rich."
Regards,
John
P.S. And he was a Democrat. |
