| I think that the problem in Catalua is that with so much emphasis being placed on teaching Cataln, to the detriment of Castellano, that students are becoming more monolingual than bilingual, the point that Moores Catalan acquaintance was trying to make.[/i][/u] |

If people are monolingual in Catalonia it's monolingual in Spanish, except for the Brits on the coast.
The whine of Moore's 'Catalan' acquaintance has been heard for nearly twenty years. It's always uttered in Spanish, normally somewhere typically 'traditional' such as the Ramblas where 80% or more of the people can be heard speaking in Spanish.
The truth is I've never met a monolingual Catalan. I don't believe any ever existed in my lifetime.
As for the standard of written Spanish going down that is unlikely. All studies done with immersion have shown that students immersed in another language maintain their ability in their first language (the first studies on this were done in an English school in Madrid I worked in in the seventies). |

who are, of course, mostly monolingual in ex-pat, with a smattering of English. |

| Thank you, thank you. Since my last post it has been bought to my attention that the Brits on the coast speak a smidgin, rather than a smattering, of English alongside the ex-pat in which they are of course fluent. My apologies. |
