OK Jen, you're probably right. Never thought I'd say that did you?
I used to scan my hometown newspaper on Saturdays, even though I wasn't after a job; it's the same principle. And I've got 15000 that says it's worth looking. |

But you're a qualified and experienced teacher. So you probably got that good job by beating out hundreds of other candidates who emailed them.
I just get annoyed by the arrogance of some of the schools who know they can pay Thats magazine a fee and just know they will receive lots of resumes coming in. In most cases they don't respect their staff because they have the budget to simply put in another 'hook' ad but they're usually not respectable enough to get referrals from current/former teachers.
I don't hate you guys. I just hate those rotten schools that are mushrooming all over the place and the people who put up with them.
And, for my critics, all I'll say is is: WHATEVER |

So darling, give it up...Other than receiving wisdom from on high (that would be you, obviously), how does one find a job in Shanghai? We all now know that Thats fits neatly in to the "WHATEVER!!!!" category (never make that mistake again ya'll), so, help us out. |

I'm not a recruiter. How many recruiters are there based in Shanghai? Very few. Know why? Because there's always a floating population of English "teachers" here at all times of the year willing to take any job.
The huge "lumpenproletariat" of cheap labor (usually from the Commonwealth countries, especially Australia) It's an employers dream (if they can accept low quality teachers!)
And did I ever state that others can't do what I can? No.
You are just another sad case, based on your writings here. |

Jen,
Why are you so much opposed to Australia and Australians ? Have you ever visited the country? How many Australians have you actually met ?
You have frequently made disparaging remarks about middle aged male Australians.Yes,many of these are unqualified. Yes,many are socio-economic refugees from their homeland.Yes,many are also coming here for a "last fling",by trying to get a local girl friend - or even a wife (a "farmer wife",as you put it).
Such Australians are not truly representative of their country.Since the mid 70s,Australia has undergone much social and economic change in order to survive in the global market place, especially in the Asia-Pacific Rim.eg the dramatic growth of white collar and professional occupations, greater access to tertiary education, the impact of the Women's Movement, etc.Unfortunately,a lot of middle aged males have been left behing as a result of these changes.
The boorish,"ockerish" attitudes that you so readily associate with Australia are,in fact, becoming quite passe. Many of the images people often associate with Australia - especially via films such as "Barry McKenzie" and "Crocodile Dundee" - were,in fact, caricatures of the "old" Australia, especially the lower working class culture of the pre 1970s and the "bushies" of a much earlier period - both of these lifestyles are often perceived as being incompatible with the modern ,sophisticated,globally-oriented "new" Australia.
However, you should realise that many middle aged Australian males who come here happen to be highly-educated,articulate,well-presented,and confident professionals. Many of us left secure well-paid jobs for the sake of a late/mid-life career and lifestyle change. Many of us are more concerned with doing a good job, learning about the local culture, travelling, and earning enough to have a comfortable lifestyle - rather than "chasing after skirt",as you once put it .So, you shouldn't put all middle aged Australian males under the one category: losers and lumpenproletariat.
Yes,I agree with you:many of the middle aged Aussies who come here a a pretty pathetic lot - unqualified, chips on their shoulders, etc. It's sad really - they are the victims of the massive social and economic changes that their country has undergone over the past three decades.
Keep up with the postings.
Regards,
Peter
ps: Some time back, you mentioned something about earning 18000 RMB per month. Were you actually "stirring" us up ? Most colleges/unis appear to be offering no more than 7000 pm.I am currently working in Jiangxi Province. From the 2nd Term 2004, I may consider looking for a job in Shanghai or Hangzhou. As I have been in China for only 12 months, there is still a lot that I don't know re the ESL scene in this country.Any hints/suggestions would be most appreciated.PM me,if necessary.Thank you |

I too found several (kept 2) good jobs advertised in "That's Shanghai". And i dont mean good for a semester, I mean keepers. Great management (qualified, professional Australians, mind you), real salary, respect and everything. And I needn't prove it to anyone.
When you are looking for a job, don't reject any possible avenues!
You know what they say, beggars cant be choo choo trains.
BTW, count on spending 3 months rent in advance plus half a month for an agent fee. the agent will come right out and tell you that you are foreign so you are expected to pay more. At least they admit their discrimination! I found that about 3000 Y a month is common (though I really beat the bricks and found a terrific deal). 3 words, friend: NEAR THE TRAIN STATION OR YOU WILL REGRET IT.
