Maybe it doesn't say anything about the school, per se. Maybe it means that the government of that country won't issue work permits for foreigners over 40. |

1) There are a lot of people tefling over 40 2) Perhaps you will reexamine your values at some point and be less than pleased at being considered potty because of your choice of lifestyle. |

doing TEFL for a living |
This phrase typifies all the negative attitudes surrounding our job. I for one don't 'do TEFL'. I teach English. To do that properly it makes no difference whether I'm over forty or not. (However, my teaching probably bears little resemblance to gap-year types who 'do TEFL'.) Any school that stipulates an age requirement may have very good reason for that, e.g. visa regulations. Or perhaps they are fairly clueless as to what effective teaching and learning actually is and just want young happy-clappers to fill the gaps. Regardless, teaching English at any age should not be considered 'a little short of the full chemistry set' by other teachers at the very least. |

I think there are quite a few people between 30-50 that would choose the lifestyle over the available alternatives in the U.S. |

Could someone please provide info on the work visa situation in Kyrgyzstan? The websites I have found only mention a 30 day tourist visa. |

Hi Mahn, I'm also considering applying for work at this school. When are you down to start? As far as I'm aware the post I'm going for starts on the 1 November. I have no idea how long it takes to process VISAs and such, do you? Any info would be greatly appreciated. |

Hey Mahn,
I'd love to do this job, still kind of in two minds though. Been screwed over by a Polish school recently and in a way would rather go for something quite a bit safer. On the other hand, Central Asia interests me a hell of a lot, and Kyrgyzstan looks beautiful. Also, since this Polish fiasco has left me seeking a job again with the academic year about the begin, it makes sense to go for a job that (in this case given the political instability) would not be a particularly popular one (this will be my first teaching role).
Do you happen to know what level/demographic is taught mainly there? I ask mainly because, if it's young learners, I have no qualification/experience relevant whatsoever. You had an interview post-application stage presumably? |

It's reassuring to hear that someone is in the same position/taking the same route as me. I think I'll take the next step and see what becomes of it, perhaps we'll be future colleagues. Like you I have heard generally excellent things about the town from those who have lived there, with the normal precautions about going out after a sunset curfew (which might as well be the same in Manchester to be honest).
I'll PM you if I end up going there (if you want, of course). |
