Yes, EDB told me that they do not accept online certificates! They expect actual classroom training! It sucks for me too! That's why I was scrambling.

BUT, I was just accepted to the part-time, two year HKU PDGE! I'll be curious see how they recognize a TEFL in relation to having a PDGE in 2 years! I can't imagine that at that time they will also require me to have a 120-hour, non-online, TEFL! But who knows, EDB lives in their own world.

I suppose that's a good question for the forum. How has the EDB dealt with you if you have a PDGE for English, but not a TEFL?

Is there any precedent for EDB accepting the CELTYL (the Young Learners extension of the CELTA) in lieu of a PGDE or teaching license? I'm aware there are significant difference in the length of time and amount of training involved, but the question came to mind this morning. For those of us who've been living as expats for a number of years, obtaining teaching licenses in our home countries is pretty much out of the question, and the investment in the HKU PGDE is rather steep considering the uncertain return. I've had my eye on the NET program for some time and am wondering if it's conceivable to be hired on and enjoy the higher salary longtime employees earn via any alternative licensing mechanism. (I'm going to e-mail them and ask, too, but other views are always welcome.)
