This is the most truthful and informative web site I have ever read. Truly a must read for anyone considering a time in China.

Someone has finally had the gumtion to stand up and speak the facts on all of the topics that concern us. As foreign teachers.

Well done. Hooaaahhhh.

Your right!

Finally someone saying that a teacher can forage a life in China and make something of themselves.

Before I started EFL I was in debt up to my eyeballs and my folks were worried when I was always home alone on a New Years Eve. Thru hard working and dedication to my craft, I'm foraging my life and my career.

I have to agree that this guide is very well balanced. I think it is easy to make the mistake of seeing it as very negative, as the OP did, but it's not if you read through all the sections carefully. It doesn't romanticise what teaching and living in China are like but it does provide a very fair overall view in my opinion. I also agree something like this was sorely needed and was long overdue. I've been here for over 8 years and I've learned a lot from it too.

What I also respect about that guide is that it is well documented. You're not just reading a personal opinion from some unknown person but more like an objective report based on as much outside research and material they could provide. I've read MA theses that weren't as well researched and detailed as that guide is. I have to give them credit for that.

I really like that Self Assessment Test they recently added, it is spot on.

yes indeed making something of yourself - rather than the usual, being taken-up and used as an easy to exploit cash-cow - the two most common forms being - the do-anything ESL Monkey or some China-babe's sugar-daddy.
Both sometimes seem to get dumped somewhere along the line Idea

If you haven't seen it already, check out How China Saved My Life. A truly brilliant read.
