Lucy2,
Why not try The Glenelg School of Abu Dhabi .
The English curriculum will improve reading, writing, listening, speaking, presentation, and thinking skills for students of all abilities. Throughout the year, students are introduced to a variety of literature such as novels, short stories, plays, poems, and non-fiction. Students will also present a variety of projects to classmates using PowerPoint and other presentation software.
Generally speaking, students are expected to write both creative and analytical essays. Each year every student must also complete a significant research paper incorporating a variety of sources and adhering to the format of the school's approved research guide. GSAD follows Modern Language Association (MLA) guidelines.
English courses being offered at GSAD include the following:
African-American Literary Voices (1/2 credit)
African-American Literature (1/2 credit)
Anglo-Irish Literature (1/2 credit)
AP English (1 credit elective)
British Literature (1/2 credit)
Creative Writing (1/2 credit)

I was in your position last year. Both my husband and my fields are Eng., but he's university and I've taught elementary, secondary and uni. We applied all over. I found that many schools, especially in Dubai posted multiple Eng. positions. One of you might have to consider teaching middle school, though. The jobs are out there. For us it was hard bec. the international schools wouldn't hire us with me as primary and my husband didn't have hs experience. We also have two children. We ended up with several offers, some for both of us at the same uni., some for just me and one for just him.
My advice is to expand your options. If you don't have IB or Brit. curriculum experience explain how your experience with American education is transferrable. You might also consider one of the PPP contractors. There are several in and around Abu Dhabi: Nord Anglia, SIP (GEMS), Mosaic, Cognition, CfBT. We ended up in Al Ain for my husband's job and I got a job with Nord Anglia once we arrived.
Do a search on ADEC to find more info. The PPPs pay much better than the international schools and provide housing, tuition, medical, flights, etc. The main job is as an advisor (basically a teacher mentor) where you'd be placed in a local government school and advise the teachers, helping them switch to a standards-based curriculum, very similar to what I taught in the US. I know that a few of the providers, including Nord Anglia, are hiring now. I'm really happy with the job and with Al Ain.
Good luck! |
