That's something to try, but real bones as you say. The doggies are given rawhide bones from Costco, but switching off to real ones is a good idea. |

A dog sitter I met at the park a few weeks ago told me that she makes and sells dog food following the recipes of brands like Eukanuba, but the product is, of course, cheaper. I haven't contacted her (yet... still have Eukanuba supplies in the pantry), but feel free to PM me if you want her contact info. |

My Mexican vet told me not to by Sportsman brand from Sam's Club.
He said it is very poor nutrition and that Mexicans buy it because it has an American name and they therefore think it is good quality.
He told me a word in Spanish for this Mexican belief that all merchandise American is of better quality but I forgot the word. It has to do with a collective inferiority complex that Mexican brands are of lesser quality, too.
Does anyone know the Spanish word for this? |

I don't know if there's a more specific word in re merchandise, but it's a subset of malinchismo, the mindset of putting down everything Mexican (culture, behaviour, products, etc.) and believing that the foreign is superior.

Exactly, it's about believing that the foreign (not necessarily the American) is superior. I offered some info on this back in the days when my avatar was a painting of Malinche by Rosario Marquardt: http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=64957&start=27 |

Can anyone suggest a quality brand of dog food that is affordable here in Mexico?? |
We buy large quantities of dog food at Sam's Club. It's their "Members Mark" EXCEL Lamb & Rice formula in a bright pink bag. It's seems to agree with the dogs better than the increasingly expensive food we were buying. It costs a little over $300 pesos a bag (20 kg or 44 lbs). |

Mind boggling reading! I have only skimmed it - need to be more alert to give it a good read!
Great info though. Makes me thing I need to find a butcher rather than a pet store! |

The butcher here in Teacapan feeds his dogs a cooked mixture of lungs and livers. I'm still using up the Solid Gold that I feed my dog. And I give him lots of raw bones and sometimes eggs to supplement. Personally, I would never let him near the Eukanuba junk, but if it's getting pricey, why not just cut the daily feeding in half and then give your dog an egg and some liver.
What I give my dog has no grains in it, so didn't have to worry during that pet food scare. It's got lots of fish oils in it, and everyone always comments on how shiny he is. I'm gonna switch to cuts from my butcher and maybe cook up some fish to go with it. I might have to track down some more cod liver oil to give him to keep that coat shiny though.
I had some friends that were vegetarians. They fed their dog a mixture of brown rice, eggs, Braggs, nutritional yeast, protein powder, garlic powder and flax seeds. That was for a city dog. Once they moved to a farm, they started feeding her meat, she needed the energy. |

Any of the quality brands found in the States or Canada cannot be found here. I go to their websites and look and my choices are Canada or the USA. Even ones with a wider international spread fail to sell in Mexico. So Eukanuba it was, as it is one of the best to be found here.
Interestingly I had a breeder tell me recently that another breeder (from the States) suggested she feed Purina Pro Plan ( ) I looked it up on the site and the second ingredient of the food was listed as one to avoid.
I just might end up making them their own food, once we move into our new place (few months away) and if I can manage to find the time once the baby comes.
I am a veggie but would never consider feeding my dog a meatless diet. Seems unhealthy to me considering they come from the wolf who eats mostly meat. Although a few veggies (salad with dressing being the preference!) and fruit are enjoyed as treats! |

I read somewhere (sorry, can't find the link) ages ago that you shouldn't give your dog more than one egg a week. I used to crack an egg over my girl's food every Sunday, so that I remembered the day. She loved it and had a beautiful coat. |

I use to give eggs but then stopped. The advice I was getting was confusing - it's good; only give the white; only give the yolk; give it all, including shell! don't give them any, it will make the sick - so I haven't given them eggs in years.
Looks like I have a lot of research ahead of me! |

When my dog was a puppy and got the runs we gave him one egg with each meal and voila nice solid poops again. So, it seems like if he had eggs every day it might stop him up a little? I don't give him eggs often.
But yeah, finding the time/space to cook up livers for him is gonna be hard, as I don't have a kitchen and haven't even been cooking for myself. |
