Yes and the names become more bizarre as they get older.
I taught a high school class with "*beep*" and "urine." Embarrassed the hell out of them when I called on them with their English teacher (Chinese one) present.

There was a girl whose English was nearly impeccable. She was the daughter of a professor. Her English name was "Cock."

She sat with me and another foreign teacher and proclaimed her name. (At class time, she was undecided. I knew her as Zhang). The other teacher and I remained stone-faced.

She was a little ruffled when we asked her if she really wanted to be known as a male chicken. She said, no. That was not her intent.

She sat for awhile then said that she would have to research.

Several days later, she joined us for dinner and declared that her name was now "Duck."

Close enough.

I've seen the following:

Power Tool

Blackendicker

Jemima ( a wonderful revival of a beautiful American Southern and Biblical name)

Harry (someone else mentioned this one. Mine was a girl too).

UpDown

MY NAME (as in yours truly)

Tom Cruise

Crampy

What I hated was when one would change her/his English name. That was when the student became known by his Hanyu name.

Turning the tables on them.......one day I was walking from one classroom to another when two young lads went running by and they yelled at me saying something like.."hi teacher, what's your name?" to which I replied
Mary instead of Ron.......this brought them to a screeching halt and they both yelled "Mary!" and went walking away shaking their heads and jabbering to each other.

I met a Chinese Adolf in Scotland when asked why he replied that he really admired Hitler his friend was called Rommel.

Also had a Bobo (means baby right?) but just made me think of clowns.

Still I prefer unique names rather than boring ones. And a lot of these names silly as they are pale into insignificance with what people call their western babies,
May i present for your consideration NZ baby '4real, Superman'

I've had some interesting ones over the years. Rainbow (f) sat next to Mermaid (f). Dandelion (f) was also in that class. I failed Genious (m). I once had a Hikki (f). Ice, Snow, Rain and Eleven were fairly common. I've had a Green Horse (m) and a Blue Rain (m) but never a Yellow Snow.

This guy still insisting his opinions and values are gospel and should be adhered to by all? If ever I came across anyone who needs to chill out a little..... Chinese students rarely use the English name outside the class, it is a tool to help the foreign teachers who are crap at recalling Chinese names. As such I have instant recall On Mad-Frog, Xylephone and the like. But am somewhat more murky on the myriad Lilys, Sunnys etc.

Can we apply the same logic to Madonna, Bruce Willis and Bob Geldolf? Eccentric naming is not permitted in Hansenland.

eccentric naming is permitted in Craigland.
but, rather than explain how silly it sounds, or insist that they change their names, i just have them look up the meanings of their names at www.behindthename.com * an entymology and history of first names
- then they realize that their eccentric names are too far out, and often, they choose another.
* can make a good homework assignment Idea

One of the most beautiful students I had at university was named Silence and she lived up to her name by never saying a word. I still gave her a good mark for looking so good.

Actually she talked a lot on her oral English test as I guess she was just shy in front of the class. Wow she was hot.
