Like normal NCTBA you are spot on.
It is not uncommon for people who have housing included in their contracts to hear about our neighbors paying almost double what our employer is paying.
Here in RAK, HCT got oodles of villas years ago, and are paying 60K a year for them. The neighbors who live in the exact same villas are now paying 110. Needless to say the property owner wants us to move out so he can double the rent.
S... the only way I would even think of taking a housing allowance is if I was living in the country already and could do the leg work to find the cheaper places on my own. But even then, take housing provided if possible because it will be cheaper and easier in the long run. |

Don't do it, don't do it, don't do it!!! If offered a housing allowance, don't walk...RUN away! It's either "accommodation provided" or nothing at all!

To be fair, things are starting to shift here, albeit slowly. Companies are slowing up the hiring, and most are expecting a mass exodus come June when the school year is up. You can find some decent 2 bedroom places for around 220,000, and even this price is dropping. Those flats would likely be converted villas (there are a good few of these on the island and in areas like Baen Al Jasraen just off the island). EVen in my building we're noticing that one unit just can't be rented...too much money, not enough interest. I'm in a one bedroom w/ garden for 200,000. Looking forward to a price drop, too, once it comes time to negotiate. |

"Toe-May-Toe, Toe-Ma-Toe!" mishmumkin, remember, NEVER let Western logic interfere with how things are actually done here! Ah, therein lies the rub!

| Well, unoccupied units that aren't renting doesn't leave landlords w/ many options. In my case, he'll stand to lose 3 rentals come next November. Prices in Khalifa City A and Al Raha beach have already been dropping bit by bit-no really interest. THings have really shifted here in the last 2 months...reason to be optimistic. |

That's great news MM!! (good to see you back here!)
Why the mass exodus in June? Will it be contracts not being renewed because of the slowing economy? Does this relate to education jobs or mostly other work?

Colleagues of mine are renting very large 3 bedroom units (subdivided legally) for under 215,000/year. They've managed to get a good owner who is happy to work w/ our employer. |

A good few people are losing jobs outside of education. One of my neighbours was hired only a few months ago (along w/ 15 other colleagues). 11 of them have already been laid off. People like him are moving out and going home. 4000+ cars left at Dubai airport-abandoned. 1500 visa cancellations/day. Companies that were hiring like gangbusters 4 months ago are backing off and cutting back.
If anything, I think most post-secondary educators are in a good position. Some of my friends in k-12 say they're expecting reduced enrolment for next autumn, but no final numbers. That could mean that private schools might be looking at lower recruitment numbers. At this point, however, it's still all speculation. |
