I think it ill-advised to come to China without having the wherewithal to get yourself out again.

good advice...

NOthing, no visa or classification of school, affiliated with SAFEA or not, no matter if it has former FTs from here to the moon willing to speak up on the school's behalf, will insure you are not getting into a situation that you will want out of and to do that you need "MAD" money, cause when u get mad, u can go.

Hello Julie, Listen to your inner voice and what China Pete has said. I came to China on an L visa, went to Shanghai for a 30 day extension and then to Hong Kong to obtain a year long business visa. The laws have changed. Listen to an old song by The Who, " Won't Get Fooled Again ".

I wouldn't feel comfortable in this situation. And since you are asking for help here I guess you don't either.

I really just needed confirmation that what my gut was telling me was right. My friend, who taught in Beijing back in 2001, has been trying to reassure me that going over on a tourist visa was going to be OK (it's his friends that were offering me the job) but I am under the impression that things have changed over there visa wise. I don't know how good the couple's connections are, I don't speak Chinese, and I know NO ONE over there. So, I'm not going to work for them, I'll just keep hammering at it, applying elsewhere. I am pretty open as to where I go in China, can anyone recommend some good schools? I feel like I'd be more comfortable working for a school who has hired FT before, and a school I can check out first! Thanks again...

Sorry but I must use bluntspeak to get my message across: If you don't know - or don't want to know - what's right and what's wrong you need to take your bearings from those that have direct experience.

The media these days are reporting about a school that was ordered two days ago to close down, putting dozens of preschoolers on the street. The school is located in Songjiang near Shanghai. It operated for two years illegally; a while back it was ordered to stop enrolling Chinese preschoolers, so the operator promised they would accept 'foreigners' only. Of course they broke their promise and were found out.
What about the teachers? Jobless, you bet. Luckily, no foreign face among them. They would be in pretty hot water too.
