There are some westerners who wear the thob and have done so for years.
I had an British-Egyptian colleague who normally wore a suit and tie but one day came to work in Saudi dress. I asked him why. "Well, I didn't feel like doing anything today, so I thought I'd dress appropriately." |

^ Haha, good one.
Dear john,
Are you sure those reverts also wore the black ring? I highly doubt it. Reverts and very religious people do not wear the black ring, and have their thobes a couple of inches above their ankles.
But even if they did, as I said, it is just one of those laws that is not--and should not be--enforced.
Regards,

Well, dont you see that I am wearing a nice white thobe with a ghutra, and a double black ring with a laser control (as in 007 films! ).
BTW, some Saudis use their black double ring to beat their children!
The black ring has a sacred meaning in some Saudi tribes, if a Saudi needs help from another Saudi, he will throw his black ring in front of him, which means a 'submission' and a request for a service or a favour which is difficult to refuse! |

'Sacred' is not the word you were looking for there. (even Saudis themselves would find the use of that word in that context to be blasphemous)
As for using it as a weapon, they even use it on each other during traffic accidents. |

Those darned things were banned at the King Faisal School during my tenure as the young punks used to beat each other with them. Then, someone showed them how to snap a towel on someone else resulting with ghutras being banned as well. God, I miss those days, not! |

| Blue eyes and fair skin are incongruous with a thob or dishdasha (IMHO). Brits, Americans, Canadians etc. look ridiculous in the local garb. |

Well, I used the word 'sacred' in a non-spiritual context (i.e. social context). Example of this, family honor is also considered as sacred thing which should not be crossed in the Saudi society!

Well, your countryman, Lawrence, which has blue eyes looked chic with his Saudi thobe and Ghutra, and double white ring!

I'm not dusky! Are you? Would you feel at ease in KSA dressed in the local garb? It hides bald pates and big bellies. I have neither! |

I think you may have misunderstood my comment. I was simply suggesting that some British, Americans and Canadians look ''out of place'' in Arab dress. I wasn't suggesting that such dress was ''ridiculous''. Accept my apologies.

Nor me, either...I'm as white as the driven snow,,,which in PC-speak is color-less...that being me not being a "person of colour"...as to the second comment...I have one...or....the other,

So you're fair-skinned. As for the other? I have a full head of hair, the other thing is incipient. (Perhaps, my age, 54 has something to do with that.) |

Dear Sheik,
"Perhaps, my age, 54 has something to do with that."
But then again, perhaps not. I'm 66, weigh 140 pounds and an 5' 9" tall.
Has your life become a bit more sedentary, possibly?
Oh - and I have all my hair, too - snow white, of course.
Regards,
John |

Dear SR, as for the second thing, I'd contemplate my belly-button...if only I could see it! And, I've got full head of hair. 54! Congrats! I turned a half century last year!
